| Seem to be doing more and more trolling in the fall months. I am looking for a new/used- strictly trolling setup and was curious what everyone's preferance was when they trolled. I seem to be trolling bigger baits- 10 jakes most of the time. I am think of an 8' fiberglass rod with a reel with clicker, probably a C3. Along with 80lb spectron and a 3 ft. 100 lb mono leader. I have heard that when trolling, one should let the bait out, adjust the drag until the bait in the water is pulling drag, then tighten your drag a half turn. Also, any tips/tricks for using dipsey divers with bulldawgs would be appreciated. Can I just hook the 3 ft. leader to the dipsey diver and then the bulldawg? Any comments/tips for succesful trolling/rigs would be appreciated. Thanks Doc | |||

| Simple Browning 8.3" downrigger rod. $29.00 Penn 209......................$45.00 Simple, yet very very effective.[;)] As far as trolling DOGS!!!...try multiple dipsys set on 1,2 and 3 settings, set #1 short and so on. You can run three on each side. Then run two out the back in the propwash, then run two out on the parasail. Four can be run off down riggers so you will be set. If you bring your wife and whole family you can run easy.....11 bulldogs.[;)] [:p] [:bigsmile:] | |||

| Jason, What type of line do you use? How loose do you keep your drag when trolling? When do you put motor in neutral? Thanks Doc | |||

| Shimano TDR 1703(7') & 1803(8') - $29 Daiwa GL47LC - $79 For a fairly cheap setup these things take a huge beating and never fail. -Phil | |||

| MP, What line do you use? Thanks Doc | |||

| Doc, I use Stren Magnathin in 30lb test. I am really happy with the whole set-up. I am looking for some longer rods around 8.6' for my back rods or for front rods if I troll 8 with 3 people. I found that using mono is much easier than braid for trolling, only difference is keeping an eye on your line and making sure it's in good condition. -Phil | |||

| I have a south bend catfish special 8' fiberglass rod ($25)with a penn 209 and 40 lb trilene big game and a 6'6" invincible x-cel graphite ($40) with a pen 9 and 25 lb big game mono. Lot of people use much different set ups than this though. Many like graphite rods to see the action of their bait better. | |||

| I use my okuma 20dx line counter reels, 59 bucks. I have stren flourocarbon on them and it works well. My rods are garcia colonon bucktail rods my dad bought on a binge. Nothing special about them. | |||

| "What type of line do you use? How loose do you keep your drag when trolling? When do you put motor in neutral? " Ok. Doc, 1)I use 20lb Trilene and even 15lb big game, 20" florocarbon leaders. 2)Loose enough so you can pull it out. Medium tension. 3)Never put the motor in neutral, until the fish is close to the boat. I will slow down to a "put put". but added tension is needed inorder to not loose the fish. Because of the wind the boat will float back and you cant pick up line fast enough....so you have to keep the boat going foward somewhat. Keep the rod low and reel fast, trying not to make the fish jump. With 20lb mono you dont want the fish to jump, because its too much like a rubberband.[;)] Hope that helps![:bigsmile:] | |||

| MuskyPippo, Just picked up a Shimano TDR 1903, looks nice. Still waivering on the reel. Thanks for the tip. If you know of anyone willing to trade of sell a trolling reel please put them in touch with me. Thanks again, Doc | |||

| For the planner boards I run 8 1/2 foot Diawa rods (cheap) with the Penn 209's. The flat lines I run the same or I really like wire line. A Diawa line counter with a Eagle Claw roller guide rod and 20 pound seven strand trolling wire. Cablea's makes a decent line counter reel and rod combo for $100.00. I have a couple of those and they are nice. | |||

Posts: 5874 | I used to use my 6500 C3's and older rods for trolling. Last year I picked up some Shakespeare Tidewater 10 Line counters and Gander mountain downrigger rods. 20# mono, and 50# flouro leaders. I used these rod/reels and they performed well. I've heard some negatives on the Tidewaters, but for $35, they have performed great. No problems. If I was trolling 10 hrs/day, everyday, like some of the guides, I probably would have went with Diawa LC's. Also, just picked up some LC kits for my 56500 C3's. $35 each at Fleet Farm.

Posts: 1046 | I just picked up 2=8' 6" SouthBend Catfish Rods heavy action, fiberglass for 20.00 each last years close-out! Coupled with 6501 and line counters I hope they will work good! I am thinking of using leadcore in #45, has any one else used it? Will it get me a little more depth with less line out? Any help from some seasoned trollers,cause this is definatly not my territory! Thanx guys for some input! Handy

Posts: 1137 Location: Holly, MI | I don't know if bass pro still has the daiwa accudepth line counters on sale or not (they were $39 ea, reg $49). They are a bargin for a trolling reel. They are bushing, not roller bearing, reels like the more expensive daiwa (LC). The bushing reels will hold up forever in my opinion but wont cast like a bearing reel. If you want tough, inexpensive reels expressly for trolling these are the ticket. The Shimano TDR Trolling rods as mentioned are a great all purpose rod. I also use them on Lake Michigan with the downrigger for King Salmon. If you don't want the expense of specifically trolling reels just use your regular ABU baitcasters as long as they have a clicker.

Posts: 229 Location: Willoughby, Ohio | Speaking as one of those eastern folks, I use a Daiwa SG47LC spooled with 80# Whiplash on a 7' 10" GLoomis trolling rod. I'd recommend the reel but save the money and pick up a St Croix 10' Glass Pro rod. I use 60 to 80 # Ande mono for my leader. Here in Ohio, I can't think of anyone offhand who uses planer boards or dipseys for muskie trolling. Most everyone just flatlines. I also use an 8' dipsey rod with a Penn 525 reel as a backup. I prefer it for smaller baits in the springtime. My 7' St Croix with a C4 with a linecounter also sees action trolling. Edited by Worm Drowner 4/12/2003 7:35 PM

Posts: 1247 Location: On the Niagara River in Buffalo, NY | For the smaller crankbaits I use a St.Croix Pro-Glass Med-Hvy Action 8 ft. 2 peice Downrigger Rod with an Okuma 30DX Linecounter Reel and 80 lb test PowerPro,cost around $150. For 10" to 13" crankbaits I use a St.Croix Pro-Glass Heavy Action 10 ft. Dipsey Rod with an Okuma Titus 15L Leverdrag Levelwind Reel and 45 lb. test Mason Leadcore Line,cost around $260. For the Plow's,Hooker's,Slammer Deepdivers,Basin Bait's,Wishmasters etc.,I use a St.Croix Pro-Glass X-Hvy Action 7 ft. Rod with a Penn 340GTI Reel and Mason 60 lb test Leadcore Line,cost around $240. For the propwash rods for speed trolling close to the boat I use St.Croix 6 ft Hvy Action Ocean Standup Rod with an Penn 330GTI Reel w/HT100 Dragwashers and heavy duty clicker and Berkley Excalibur 10X 30 lb test Co-Polymer Line. Posts: 105 Location: Kawartha Lakes, Ontario | I use an Abu 6500C3 on an Abu Workhorse 6'6" Medium Heavy rod (graphite with a glass tip) with 80 lb PowerPro line and a 3' to 4' sevenstrand SS 65 lb. leader and 100 lb. test BB swivel and snap. I set the drag just tight enough to hold the lure and haven't lost a fish with this setup in 2 years. I would use an all glass rod for bigger, hard-pulling cranks.
