I coated some new baits with E-tex and it has not cured still tacky to the touch after 3 day , are you guys applying any heat source?, mixed everything to directions, 1 to 1 stirred for 1 minute, and baits are still tacky after 3 days.what could be wrong?

hi. your mix is either wrongthe temperature,s too low. our baits are dry in 24hrs at 68 degrees. remix and clear over your lures. mix the clear very well, and measure accuratly

yup ^^^^. Measuring and mixing are the two most
important steps IMO. If you dont have that right, no need to go any further. The only time my etex stayed tacky was from mis measuring or not being EXACT measurements. Depending on how many lures your coating, medicine cups work well for small amounts of etex. Good Luck.

What do mean about the wrong temperature ? do you heat this stuff up before you apply it?, this is the first time I have used it?, but everything was mixed accuralty.

Macone,

Bummed out your baits went the wrong way. If it is a bit hard but sticky I would apply 2 new coats of etex.

When its really sticky and not even a bit hard, I'd remove the E-tex.

This is the way I mix my E-tex :

I got 20ml injection containers, in one the Hardener [black band on it : never mistaken with the Resin, otherwise is get hard in the container] and one white one the Resin.

I mix it in a small cup, and stirr it for 3-4 minutes. one way, then the other way. scraping it from the bottom. don't get all jumpy if there ar a lot of bubbles in it.

Let it stand for 15 minutes and let it react and rest for a while. a lot of the bubbles of oxygen can be removed already during this 15 minutes rest. Just breathe out inside the cup once a minute. the CO2 in your breath is pulling the oxygen out of the etex and the bubbles disapear from the Etex.

Start smearing away on your bait. if there are bubbles on your bait, just breathe and blow on them, then they will disappear in a heartbeat.

There is a little "butt" in mixing the E-tex this way : when the Resin is in the container for a long while, it gets a tad merky. then get an other container or throw the Resin away and put some new Resin in your container.

Pikeminded has the same process that I use. The syringes help out alot. They are exact and take out the quess work. The only other advise I could give is to stir/mix the 2 parts together until you can't feel your hand any longer.....you then know you are at the halfway point....so keep mixing!!!

As far as temperature you do not heat it up, just make sure that the etec is stored indoors at room temp and your drying wheel is in a place where it is at least 68 degrees.

One more little thing which can be a big thing. Do not use the brush you apply the E-tex with to mix as it can can get unmixed epoxy on the brush and will mess up the stuff you apply, in other words stay tacky.

That last one is a good piece of infro. I have done this and have had the issue because of it! I use the plastic baby food containers that Gerber now comes in. Just keeping hunting for friends that have babies to build the supply. One baby = 2.25 yrs of Epoxy cups!

I weigh my 2 part epoxy with a gram scale in baby food containers. Baits I coat take 6 grams of mixed epoxy each. Six baits equals 36 grams of mixed epoxy. 18 grams each of resin and hardner, plus maybe a gram or so more each. Mix with a stir stick for 3 minutes, let sit for 5 minutes stir again and brush on.
I bought the scale at walmart for about $25. It's good for weighing baits when they're all done too.

I'd hate to see everyone throwing away their epoxies when this happens. All you need to do is apply a bit of heat to it and it clears right up. The hardener of any two part epoxy can do this, some of them can turn pretty solid and white. There are several ways to fix it: 10 second shots in the microwave, put it in a pot of boiling water, heat gun, or a hair dryer to name a few. I put mine on top of the water jacket on my coal stove for a few minutes. Just heat it a bit until it clears up, problem solved and no epoxy wasted.

Wow! That bluegill looks awesome. Glad you got the etex to work as you wouldn't want to ruin that paintjob. I would eat it .....that is of course if I was a big fat muskie: )

You have to be patient when working with e-tex, and measure exact, takes practice !!!! thanks for everyone’s help much appreciated., I always wondered why John Snow and Novak had such a great finish on their baits, I know now E-tex !!! good Stuff.

When I am applying it to my lures, I actually use a tip that a bait-maker out east gave me and that is to use slightly more hardener in the mix. Some of my baits were turning out the same way, and this fixed the problem.
