Location: Home of the 2016 World Series Champion Cubs | Rich, 2007 will be my first time on Vermillion as well. Going Sep 8. I too would like to grab a good map. Also which is better for Vermillion, Lakemaster or Navionics?? Just bought my first Lowrance with the chip thingy. Need to get'r set up for the 07 season. Gonna take her out in early march to Kinkaid. New toys...Gotta love'm

| Best Paper Map - Lakemaster Map
Best Chip - Last year, both Lake Master and Navionics had 3 ft contour maps of the lake on thier chips. The Lake Master chips let you zoom in farther than Navionics though. Navionics has a new chip out of Vermillion this year with one foot contours. I am not sure if the zoom factor will still be an issue with new chip or not.
I also guide on Lake Vermillion if you should have a need for guide.

Location: Kronenwetter, WI | Right now I'm running the 5.4 Version of MapSource on my Garmin. How does that stack up with Lakemaster and Navionics? Do etiher of those work with Garmin units?

Location: north central wisconsin | I could zoom in just as far with the navionics as the lakemaster on my lcx-25. Certain units(the older smaller screened Lowrance) won't allow navionics to zoom closer than 1/8 mile. I see that the new small units have been upgraded too, and wonder if they'll allow for a closer zoom. |

Location: Lake Vermilion Tower, MN | I have been running the Lakemaster chip for the past 3 years and in my opinion it is far superior to the Navionics map.
Most of the guides that fish Vermilion on a regular basis use the Lakemaster chip. That should tell you something about which map to buy. The Lakemaster maps are compatable with Garmin GPS as well.

Location: north central wisconsin | Guideman, the maps are identical if you have the navionics premium. Just wanted to add that for the guys that might want one chip that covers WI and MN(though alot of the other nav. maps are not the quality of the LM, many of the bigger and popular maps are the same).

| As far as I know, the Lake Master is still the best paper map out there for Vermillion.
Regarding the chips . . . as Reef Hawg said the three foot contour maps are pretty much the same. If I remember correctly, the Navionics has more color shading for the different depths than Lakemaster.
Reef Hawg, my units are 2006 Lowrance 110's and I still have the zoom issue. How far were you zooming in when comparing? Did you try .006 or .008. I can't get in that far with my Navionics, only Lakemaster.
Anyone know if the one foot contour map will have the same zoom issue?

Location: north central wisconsin | Josh, not sure if it goes that close(boat is in storage or I'd check), but I just know that my 332 only went in to 1/8 mile and my 25 gets pretty tight. Might not be that tight though. Terry, I am definately not doubting you, as you are definately an authority on V. I just thought my map looked identical to the lakemaster and was always uncannily 'on' when navigating out there. Was the nav chip you used, pre 2006 version maybe? Navionics uses several lakemaster maps on their chips now. That said, I have no doubt you saw what you saw and will do some more comparing.

If you did not have a newer premium chip, your map was probably pretty sad as you said. Last year I ran the Navionics Premium and Lakemaster simultaneously on the bow and console and they were pretty much the same everywhere I went except for the zoom issue and subtle shading differences. I use the Navionivs for Navigating/Driving and the Lake Master for fishing on the bow. Should be interesting to play with the one foot contour map next year. Hopefully, it doesn't give away the handful of spots the 3ft map missed. Not going to be as much of a need for us guides when the maps are this good!

Fact is, most of my customers book trips with me because of my good looks and my wonderful sparkling personality. :)

| Just fyi, the zoom issue is more a matter of the hardware and it's software than the chart program being run. The Raymarine, Northstar and Hummingbird product will zoom into 1/32 with the Navionics.
That being said, there is an update out right now for many of the Lowrance units, past and present (you will have to check their web site) that will allow you to download updates that improve on two very important issues with the Lowrance/Navionics product...the zoom level and the Map Data screen with the 'zone' or confusing 'numerical' identifiers. If the update works for your Lowrance/Eagle plotter/GPS, when changing areas you can now see and choose the different states/areas in normal state abbreviations or names, not just coded numbers. So, on many of your Lowrance/Eagle units, and again you need to check out the Lowrance web site for details and which units these updates work in, Lowrance has addressed the Navionics zoom issue and the confusing 'code' numbers.
