Here goes!

I want the opinions of the guides on this board:

Do you let your clients drink in your boat?

Would also like input from the clients point of view:

Do you think you should be allowed to drink in a guides boat.
Are you there to learn and fish only, not to drink and have fun.

I know there is a "FINE" line between just having a few beers and stumbling around in our boat stepping on rods.
Having two guy's in your boat drunk can be a bad thing!!![:knockout:]

I say, In the boat why even drink beers? Its probaly not the best for you in a long day of fishing.. drink something that will rejuvinate you and restore energy like water or sports drink.

The insurance company that carries my liability insurance prohibits any alcohol consumption during the hours that I am guiding. So to answer your question, there is no drinking in my boat.

Now when we get to the landing, well, some of the greatest beers in the world have been drank at a boat landing.

nothing like a nice beer (just one) with a few sandwiches for lunch! I always have one bottle of beer with me for lunch. Except in wintertime. It can taste good after a whole morning of casting, getting a few minutes rest. But never more than one, that's not the idea

From a personal standpoint I don't mind having a few cold ones in the boat. Generally though I just bring water or gatorade but any of my buddies are welcome to bring there own as long as it doesn't get in the way of fishing.

From a guide perspective I think the liabilitie issues are just to great. Not only on the water but If you let a guy get sloppy drunk during a day of guiding and then allow him to drive home there may be significant legal issues as well.

I like a good beer now and then.
I don't see why someone would hire a guide to go out and get plowed. Can do it much cheaper at the local watering hole. If I'm out alone or with a friend, like Divani, I may have one. But, 99% of the time it's water. Coke and a Payday are OK too.

I feel that there is a time for fishing and a time for drinking. The two will never mix for me when it comes to enjoying the outdoors. I feel it takes away from being out there. That being said, if someone else wishes to enjoy a few then by all means go for it....safely.

one thing I would like to add: if I drive to the fishing spot and back home, no beer for me. It's only when I stay there for a few days or I don't have to drive home. May sound stupid because I only drink one beer at lunchtime together with some sandwiches, but I am disgusted of people who drink&drive. You are already tired from casting all day and you may have a long drive (+2hours like me) ahead of you. Then drinking is out of the question. Be responsible.

I fully understand the issues some guides have to consider. Better safe than sorry!

Ontario doesn't allow any alcohol of any kind in the boat when on the water, so there isn't any in my boat. The fine is something like $50.00/bottle empty or full.

Doesn't mean we can't have one once we get back to shore!

None in the boat, EVER. Insurance doesn't allow it. I have had a few bad experiences with intoxicated clients; I am too old for that now!!

A beer at Christian's after the day is fine, maybe one at lunch off the water; but none for me. I make my living on the road, can't afford to get busted!![:sun:]

Don't get me wrong guy's, I don't allow drinking in my boat. Just wondering what your views are on the subject.
I'm not talking about guy's driving up for a day and driving home drunk, I'm talking about guy's staying at a resort for a week on vacation. They book you for a couple of days and want to relax and have a couple beers. When you drop them off at the dock, their home!

I don't drink when I fish, I wont even stop casting to answer mother natures "CALL"!!![:0] I might miss a fish!! [:p]

I don't need to check my insurance policy as I know it is ilegal to even have beer in the boat open or not.

I did have a guy drink non alcoholic beer last year but I told him to keep it low keeyed so not to get bothered for nothing. [:sun:]

I THINK 1 BEER IS OK. I MEEN YOU MIGHT NEED ONE AFTER LOOSING A MONSTER JUST OUT OF NET RANGE. A CALMER DOWNER.
DRUNK DRIVING IS BAD, SOBOR GOOD. A LIFE IS NOT WORTH IT.

No alcohol in my boat while taking clients out. Besides the insurance issue, it is way too dangerous to be slinging big baits around if Joe Blow and his sidekick have had one too many.

I drink very little as it is and I never drink when I am fishing. Heck it's hard enough catching a musky let alone doing it under the influence. I drank a few rum and cokes at the swap and I think the last drink I had before that was the chicago swap in january. I can't remember how long before that.

I used to play a lot of serious tennis when I was young. I would never have considered drinking and then attempting to play that game. The hand/eye coordination, concentration and decision making, attention to detail- and thus the quality of play-would all be gone with any alcohol.
Precisely the SAME skills are needed while fishing.
Why ruin a great thing that I take seriously with something I can do later at home or in the cabin?
Just my opinion,
Don
