Posts: 20269 Location: oswego, il | This is all in good fun but what would you do? My partner and I are casting with two suckers out. It is my partner's turn, lets for the sake of arguement call him partnerX. Fish takes the sucker, he grabs the rod and sets the hook. My sucker rod snaps in two places leaving him to fight a fish with just the reel and handle. He gets the fish. Comes around again and it's his turn. Before I get into that, I am at this point down 5 rods broken in the last two weeks. I was with another buddy of mine(partner Y) when he got crossed up a bit in a culvert and I did not realize my rods were 5" or so over the side wrecking my 3 primary casting rods and a sucker rod. So now I have this spare rod I am using for suckers, lets just say it is one any "AVID" musky fisherman would use. I joked earlier that he would break this one too and sure enought, this rod that any "AVID" musky fisherman would use breaks! He still got the fish. Now he has broken two of my rods, just setting the hook. Now later on, I have a fish up hot on a figure eight. It goes two times around and when I get her up the front side of the eight, here comes, again for the sake of arguement, I am calling him partnerX, his bait and the musky makes a bee-line for it and eats it boatside, stealing my fish. I have done this twice to him but lets not clutter the issue with facts. What should be my next course of action? Edited by ToddM 10/30/2006 7:26 PM

Posts: 16632 Location: The desert | Ex lax is a good idea but in rare cases could be bad for health....painting his rods pink would be hilarous. He would be stuck with that for life. No chance could he sell a pink rod. Ex lax would last a few hours....pink rods are forever! Mike

Posts: 572 Location: Williamstown, WV | No honestly, I would tell him how much those rods cost and see what he says. If he says, "yeah it's gonna suck for you to replace them." then i'd wrap the anchor around him push him over. Actually I'd just stop taking the guy, he sounds like a clutz so he's eventually gonna hurt you (By breaking your 5 rods, it's just God's way of giving you a hint...your next) Dump him and find a new fishing partner. shawn

Posts: 20269 Location: oswego, il | WV, I am not going to have him buy new rods, one has a lifetime warrantee and the other one was older and it was cold anyway. I just threw this up as a razz plus he is going to fix the other ones that broke the week before.

| Chili is an easy payback, but you should really just ask him to buy you a new sucker rod | |||

Posts: 136 | I say a fish in the boat is a fish in the boat no matter how its done, just my opinion, as for the rods you can use them to stir the chili and then poke him with them until he finishes it all.

Posts: 496 Location: midwest | I would take what's left of the rod an "avid" musky fisherman use and put a tip top on the butt section. This would become angler "x" or "J.M."(whichever you prefer) sucker stick and he would only be allowed to use this even though both of you are fishing out of his boat

Posts: 8856 | Well Todd... If my partner stepped on my rods and broke them, or slammed them in the door of the truck, or did somethig/reckless/stupid/careless, I'd expect him to replace my equipment. But setting the hook on a fish? You can't blame anyone for that. My next course of action in that case would be to stop using graphite rods for sucker rods. Fish stealing is a whole other story. That depends on the situation too -- if he was just reeling in his bait to get ready to grab the net while you were working the fish, that's what you call lucky. If he ran over next to you and started doing figure 8's, that's what you call a jerk. I can say this for sure: Being boatless has given me the opportunity to fish with a lot of different people. There are some who could break my stuff and I'd be furious. There are some who could break my stuff and I'd laugh. There are some who could figure 8 a fish I had up and catch it and I'd never fish with them again. Other guys could do it and I'd be glad they caught the fish. In your particular case though... Breaks two rods and steals a fish in the same day? I'd say a trip to Gander on the way home would have been appropriate.

Location: Contrarian Island | well, breaking a rod on a sucker hit is not his fault..maybe use fiberglass cat rods to solve that problem. You figure 8'd two of his fish before and are mad he took one from you? paybacks are a b*tch. the culvert thing...well, is it his fault or yours for not knowing your rods were outside the boat gunnels? tough call Avids have a lifetime warranty right? go get a new one... but put some exlax in his chili just for fun!
