Posts: 71 | I am thinking about buying an ABU reel but don't know which one. I am considering the 7000 Pro Rocket and the RCN60HC. I wan't the, spool Capacity and Thumb Bar of the Record but the Gearing of the Pro Rocket. I will be using this reel for VERY large Baits and Grinding heavy weeds. I really wan't another TE but simply can't afford one. Unless there's another reel I am missing That has: 4/1 Ratio Thumb bar Power handle 6500 Size Instant Anti. Reverse Durable, Durable, Durable, Little Help. Experiences, opinoins? Thank's, Pete K. Edited by Griz619 7/21/2006 12:11 PM

If the reel does not have a power handle, put one on. This will give you more power and stay with the the gear ratio that will give more options, like the record which gives you the best off both worlds, with a multi-use setup. I have a 7000 C3 that I use for grinding and baits that require more power, but the thumb bar option would take that reel and add the only plastic-like element on the reel which features all stainless steel (or metal) components. Check out the link for the best record to flip the bill with the above scenario. http://www.abu-garcia.com/prod.php?k=50134&sk=46555&p=PURRCN40 then click on "RCN60HC" Edited by Got Esox? 7/21/2006 3:08 PM

Posts: 71 | Thank's for the replys, I didn't consider underfilling a larger spool, that should reduce the effective gear ratio. And I never really considered the Calcutta 700 going to research that a bit. Maybe a combo of both. Pete K.

Posts: 5874 | Underfilling might cause a casting distance problem. I believe gears can be interchanged on the Abu's. Perhaps Chuck Nelson can set up a reel how you want it?

Posts: 350 Location: WESTERN WI | This is true about underfilling. However, if there is a reel that will let you get away with it, then it is the Record High Capacity. I never knew that you could cast too far until this spring when I was throwing some descent sized baits with the Abu Record launching them very, very far. Just be sure too give it, or any reel, a complete cleaning after the wax coating comes off the PowerPro and finds it's way into every nook and cranny in your reel. Or maybe you use a different version of line.

Record! This reel must be the "best out of box" reel that ABU ever made.

I just got a 6500 D5, and one of the rubber crank handles pull off when I reel! Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a easy way to fix it?

Posts: 1504 Location: Oregon | Yea, I have two 5600 series ABU's that I use for salmon fishing and they both have the handles pop off of them...lol. It always happens when I am mid-battle with a fish too it seems. I just slip them back on and keep going! Jed V.

Posts: 71 | Shep, Do you happen to know the best way to get ahold of Chuck? If it is as good as everyone thinks the RCN60HC converted to 4.0/1 would fit nicely. Thank's, Pete

Posts: 1270 | Abu has changed the handles and they will no longer pull off without some SERIOUS pulling. Do yourself a favor and get a power handle for your reel, they may seem ackward at first but after the first day you will realise how nice they are.

Posts: 65 Location: Springfield, IL and Vermilion Bay, ON | I have an old 5000 from the 70's that you couldn't pry out of my hands if you cut them off first. I purchased a 'new' 6600 from Cabela's last year and it works great. I was just in the bargain cave in Owatonna and they have numerous 6600's for sale in the $50-60 range. I'd say definitely a value buy if you're in the market.

Posts: 135 | The OLDER the Ambassadeur, the BETTER the Ambassadeur. Look for EX+ ones from the 1970s. 6500Cs are probably the best all around Musky reel ever, in my opinion.
