Posts: 3242 Location: Racine, Wi | Okay, so the day is getting near, (some of you are already fishing) so let's hear how you choose the 1st spot that you work on your first venture to the lake. Once your on your "spot", what do you look for that would give you confidence in the location, and areas to focus on. Are the locations based on previous experience? Are they based on research you did through the web or word of mouth? Did you scout pre season to see what the lake is shaping up like? Let's hear it, and get the gears working.

| great question tuffy. my answer is tradition. 3 out of 5 years one in my party has hit a musky on my first spot. it is a point which slopes out 4-6 feet which is the start to the entrance to a shallow cabbage bay. 1 year we even scored 2 fish at the same time off of this point. very cool......... dannyboy dannyboy's guide service musky crazy laona, wi 715-674-2061 | |||

Posts: 3508 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Is this the same point and cabbage bay I am thinking of where my wife always seems to nab the first fish of the year, or are you a little further West of there...like down the road a bit? I'll be back there again... Steve

Posts: 32954 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I will select my opening day lake by the weather. If it's cloudy, I'll be on Pelican, and will head immediately to Musky Bay because muskies spawn there every year. If it's sunny, I'll head to Moen or George or Spider, depending on the wind, and head for a back bay with a south face.

Posts: 1996 Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | My decisions are all weather related. Water temps play the biggest factor, wind and cloud cover the next important. I fish a lot of chains early in the year so current areas are something I key on alot. Current really seems to turn those spring fish on. Day two I almost always spend on Pelican. Water Temps are the biggest factorin choosing spots there too, but you would probably find me somewhere in a weedy bay. Outlet and Musky are two of my favorites in the spring.

| Fishing IN this weekend, it will be based on early season spots that have paid off in the past. I fished Shelbyville in early January and it was all about finding the baitfish there | |||

Posts: 3242 Location: Racine, Wi | I usually pick a lake, and go based on history, and the weather as far as the spots go. Once there though, being that there is soooo much milfoil down here, this time of year, finding the areas that have cabbage can be key, as well as current in some of the lakes, from inlets and river areas. One lake in particular can be very hot in the current areas on certain days. Kevin, depending on how many beers I'm on at that point, (not that I condone drinking, but hey, it's opening day and we may be celebrating.

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | It can be very easy on the southern opener to choose a spot, or take some time, depending on water temp soley. If it is within a week or so of the spawn and the water is still cool, the bays can be good. if the water has warmed, the fish can be more active but also more spread out as the lakes temp is more evenly spread, and the channel has warmed to match the bays. I like a slower warm up with considerable rain, where the fish are still in the bays, personally. Then it can get hot, so the fish transition right to summer spots.......(never that easy....). Posts: 670 Location: Otsego, MN | Start with tradition, the same lake every year and then it's just choosing that first spot after considering the factors for that day. I then just play in the weather conditions, water temps, wind, sun/no sun, rain, etc. Is it June 3rd yet??

Posts: 1906 Location: Oconto Falls, WI | It's usually a tradition thing, and the spots on the particular lake are determined by sun/clouds. I almost always start on the deeper breaks as this is where I tend to find the bigger females. If the deeper stuff isn't paying off and I am sick of getting my butt handed to me, I then slide up to the shallower spots. These spots are often the areas the panfish are staging to spawn or are spawning in. I just don't hit the shallower stuff right away because they tend to hold the smaller males on the lakes I fish at this time of the year.

Posts: 2691 Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | I tend to let the water temps, wind, weather conditions make up my mind. Traditionally I have three starting spots. I will make up my mind the night before or on the way out from the launch. Spawning areas if the spawn is over is never a bad place to start. I like to target the first green weeds outside of the spawning areas after the spawn. It seems like active fish are always ready to stop by for a photo on the opener when I hit these spots. Shep, are you going to stay at my cottage with Jason, Joe Musky, and everyone else? Bring, beer and food and your in..........
