In the latest issue of MH, Jim Saric had a article on working out to help you stay in shape for the off season. How many of you actually work out in the off season with the intent to get or stay is shape for musky fishing. I'm not talking about 12 ounce curls, I mean a real work out at a gym.

hi. i do work out with the intent to keep my self in shape for muskies. i work my arms and shoulders and upper and lower back i tend to focus on areas that start to break down on me during a long day on the water. also arnt the big skies females? so i want to look good in hopes that they will be more attracted to me than you guys. you dont have to kill your self to build your self. 10-20 min here and there will go a long way and you dont need the gym if you are like me im shure you can add plenty of inches to your arms by doing some curls with your tackle box. sit ups crunches push ups side bends all work well. i have a system i use at home that helps me out. and being in good shape alsso helps to prevent injury.

12oz curls dont hurt if you do it smartly.

I play basketball 4-5 days a week in off season.I think it really helps on those long days.I got my partner to start working out 2 days a week also.I think it does help esp when casting big baits all day long.0723 Bill Ramsey[:praise:]

Crap, I used to work out every day in college and after that every other day untill I stopped racing. I need to get back to it. I am looking at getting a bowflex when my money is a little better. Some days I really feel it in my shoulders and lower back.[:knockout:]

I take my oldest daughter to swimming lessons. I figure if I go often enough I may get in shape through osmosis (LOL).

I do spend time on the tread mill. I notice a big difference when I stick with a regiment for quite a while (30 min. each day). Makes standing up all day much easier.

I workout hardcore five days a week, not for fishing but for firefighting, have to be in great shape for that. It's awesome stress relief too. I run two miles three of the five days then run two miles with intervals and stairs on the other two days. I also do 150 crunches a day, pull-ups, curls, push-ups, military press, squats, split squats, up-downs, leg press, swimmers, quads and hams, just to name a few. Some days it is not very fun, but the rewards definately outweigh that.

I started working out in high school, and never stopped, just the routine and exercises changed. I used to work out at the gym three times a week. Now it is three times on the stationary bike for at least 33 minutes, with abs thrown in, and to the gym once a week concentrating on chest, shoulders, arms, and back. After all is said and done, I can at least say I have weighed the same for quite a few years, with no large dips up or down.

I have probably spent more time on abs in the last two years then I would like, but they seem to keep my back problems in check better than anything else I tried.

I have to agree with the treadmill. 30 minutes a day, making sure to suck in your gut, shoulders back, walking upright...is good for your lower back and your stamina. It really helps when you plan on standing all day.
I'll be doing 30 minutes a day til it's time to go to the Cave.
Unfortunately I can't do anything about the rotator cuff tear, but I've changed my casting style so my right arm never gets above my head. I bring along a batting helmet for all my boat partners just in case.
If anybody with low back problems is interseted, I have a series of excercises printed out from a place called SpineCare that they gave to me to specificly strengthen my 'core' muscles to support my low back while standing. I haven't had my back go out since July, and fishing last year was much more bearable.

I play basketball for the junior college in my area, and we work out every day before practice. I've never thought of it, but I know when it comes to musky fishing, I'll be in great shape. This just gives me more incentive to work harder while in the weightroom.

I do work out and yes with muskie fishing in mind. I have a bad back and nothing like being out of shape and throwing 10 inch jakes all day. I notice when I am in shape my back hurts less and I am able to fish longer and harder....plus the chicks dig the buffness.[]

I talk about working out nearly everyday!! Does that count?
.....I do play basketball each week with guys much younger than I am just to keep the workouts intense. No walking and no hanging on the rim....anymore.

I have been carrying my wife for 13 yrs.,5 mos. + 8 days...more than enough to keep me in shape! Also I work 6 days per week + get in a lot of walking + dump mail sacks + parcel pitching....not really fun but mentally challenging. If I feel faint on the water, I remove my hat + stick my head in the water + blow bubbles; I find this not only refreshing but it also attracts fish! I believe in keeping mentally fit also + find myself doing grad. school level equations every hr. I'm awake...and to fuel all this activity one must indulge in a complex dining extravaganza. Prior to boat entry I engage in a short interpretive dance routine then jump up + down to blend the mental + physical energy needed for a full day on the water. I then become one w/ my surroundings + lay in the floor 'til we reach our destination..... [::)] [:sun:]

I work out every day after school for about an hour, not for fishing, but for football. I plan on starting at quarterback next year as a junior, so I have to do everthing I can. Throwing a football and casting a fishing rod use most of the same muscles, so you might want to give this a try: http://www.trickeyqbcamps.com/ (go to news)
Jeff has some great exercises on there that I think would really help all aspects of your casting; accuracy, distance, endurance, etc. Doesn't take that long to complete.

I have a 3 1/2 month old set of twins. Does carrying 15 lbs. of babies count as a workout? If it does then I workout everyday when I get home from work for the next 3 - 5 hours. I love those two, so I guess it isn't really work.

MJB-04.....Jeff Trickey was the B-Team coach where I went to high school! Funny you should mention his camps. I'm real good friends with him.

I did one sit up this morning...I am on my way to being fit.

During the super bowl I held back I only ate this:

1 bowl of ice cream, with syrup.
Fries
Chicken nuggets
4 bowls of pop corn
2 Captain and cokes.

I plan on eating only these very good foods.

I am always in GREAT shape during archery season for deer, because of all the walking. I drop to 190, feel and look alot better, and always swear I will maintain that weight...until the sportshows start. Sheesh!! Now I am back to my average winter fat pill weight of 205!! Guess I need a treadmill.

Jason, the food groups( dairy, grain, vegetable-as in couch potato-) you ate during the (for once) exciting Super Bowl game last night were good..and good FOR you!!

I question the physical benefit of Captain's and Coke, but can vouch for the mellowing effect it has on me.[:0]
