so im new to trolling. Boat is a 96 stratos 219f (very similar to a ranger 690vs, its just a little bit longer and wider 19'3 and 92beam) i just bought a 2021 9,9 merc. manual start, manual lift, and 25" leg. Ive got a tie bar set up to put on it coming today, my question is. Should i just put a Troll master pro 3 (wireless) throttle control on it, and lock it in the straight position (this motor has that capability built in, and steer with my terrova from the front ? it seems like this would be more maneuverable and less complicated due to not having a linkage from the main motor to deal with.

I'm sure others will have varying opinions, but trolling with the trolling motor down is a lot of torque on the mount and wears out the pins/aluminum sideplates in a terrova. My preference is always to steer from the console or use the tiller handle. I would opt for the tie bar. I troll up to 6.5 mph and would not want my terrova in the water when contour trolling areas. It is a hassle. It also can't react as quickly as the wheel or tiller handle.

i would think the contour trolling would be awesome with the terrova in if you had link. let the kicker push and the terrova steer along the line that you're fishing? 6.5 is quite fast from what i gather though, and i could definitely see that imparting a lot of stress at those speeds.

I steered my boat with my terova and pushed with a 20 hp Suzuki 4 stroke kicker. I built a bigger aluminum fin for the terova and usually only had to run on a 1 or 2 setting used very little battery. Worked well especially when salmon fishing at muskie speeds I didn't use it when alone in rough conditions. It was scary going out on the casting deck to stow in 3 footers.

do you have a picture of the fin you built? that sounds like a fantastic idea

Too old and stupid to have ever figured out how to post pictures to this board or to my computer from my phone
If you PM me the number of a phone I can text pictures to I could send them.
I made 4 and sold 3 the guys were really happy with the results.

at walleye speeds like under 2 mph, i use the bow mount steer method. Its good to push slow in big wind, do it casting as well when really wanting to push into the wind to control speed.

muskie trolling i like to either steer kicker with tiller handle, and when i get lazy attach to the big motor / wheel. I have the best look at my electronics from there anyway

I would think using the trolling motor to steer at muskie trolling speeds would be an issue especially if you had to make sharp turns. Hook it up so you can steer the big motor with the kicker.

No mine is bigger and you don't drill into the motor. There is a commercial one I saw on a boat whose Idea I used. If anyone I texted pictures to know how to post I would appreciate it.

if you hit a piece of debris with your trolling motor at muskie trolling speeds you will learn your lesson.

Nothing floating is going to hit anything that wouldn't hit the shaft anyway . I'm aware of where I'm going and were talking less than 5 mph. Salmon fishing is where it really shines at 2.5 mph . Most outboard boats under 20 feet where I fish are steering with their Ipilot we call it 4 wheel trolling this just gives more control while saving battery.

i know while trolling on the bay the majority of boats ive seen have their trolling motor in. but i think speeds out there are usually 3-3.8

It doesn’t react quickly enough. You are either buried in the weeds or too far from where you desire while contour trolling. The only thing the trolling motor is good at IMO while trolling is keeping the boat straight so you don’t end up having to reset board lines. I can troll much more accurately with a tiller than I can with the trolling motor, even if using record a trail or link.

I recommend connecting the kicker steering to the main outboard, and getting some kind of throttle control at the console. I also highly recommend buying a steering knob, they are great for trolling and docking. I don't personally like trolling with my trolling motor down in big waves, the shaft and mounting takes a beating. It can be an advantage in calm water at slower speeds though.

I could see wanting it down if you were utilizing your bow Mega or LiveScope, I wonder how many are doing that?

yup Green Bay alot of folks have the trolling motor down. Their thought is when you have a fish on your trolling motor on Auto pilot gives you a hands free method of keeping boat going strait as not to tangle multiple boards and lines while fighting fish
can be used as a steering tool also if you kicker is locked strait ahead

depending on body of water if you dont need to make tight turns you can lock kicker straight and steer with big motor works ok just response is a bit slower, i have the tie bar but sometimes am too lazy to put it on if i just want to troll for a bit or trolling between casting spots works for me
