Hi everyone,

Will be making my first trip up to the northwest angle area for a week stay in Mid July. I have fished east of the angle area and like it a lot, but considering I have the option now to go north of the windigo island area I am curious about pressure that direction. I have never traveled north toward monument bay and big narrows area or maybe better stated, been that far west before.

This brings me to my question. I know July is a busy month up there, and I am wondering just how busy it might be from those who have or are up there at that time. Am I going to be finding boats fishing muskies all over the place or am I going to be finding I need to travel further than monument bay to get away from people...

No doubt the map looks awesome and spots are plentiful, but that can make for thin soup if everyone and their brother is out there fishing as well.

Thanks much for any insight to those willing to share...

Steve

VMS I would not spend much time in monument bay I fished that last year in july and only raised one fish there are better spots a little north and east of there. The musky school will be going on the 19-26 of July I think but there is so much water you can always find a spot that looks fishy. I can tell a few spots send me a pm if you want will be busy next couple of days but I will get back to you.

ya don't fish Monument bay Ive only caught about three dozen out of that bay, caught some biggies 48"+ and have seen some absolute giants.... but since they weren't there last year I'm sure they wont be there next year as well.... Monument has some killer spots! Spots I can almost guarantee a fish....What is Monument bay like 8,000 acres? No muskie in there

Hiya,

I figured the fish are there, but what about other boats? just how busy is it? Hoping to find quiet places to fish without a whole bunch of boats running around...

just depends, its right off main track and Frolanders is tucked in the back.. so at times it can get "busy" for lake of the woods...Ive seen times when there are 7 or 8 muskie boats in there, its good water all around there though, going east to bishop's bay is good as well, there is often a lot of traffic there and in big narrows too ...by that I mean you may see another boat 1/2 mile away

What's it going to be like just north of Windigo or closer to Angle inlet itself?

Gotta plan which ways will be best for me to go...

VMS - You wont get away from seeing a muskie boat mid-July in the angle for very long..if a guy fishing a mile away from you bothers you.. the angle is not a good spot ... its such a big lake with so many great spots, my advice for mid July is to look at a map for main lake rock points, rock complexes, areas where island are close to each other, markers on main track that show rock reefs... the are 100's of these types of spots, make a plan before you leave the dock, pick 10-15 spots that look good on the map for a milk run, if there is a boat move to the next spot...then don't be afraid to re-fish areas you see or catch fish.. IMO running and gunning can lead to trouble on the angle, especially if you are new to the area....you must fish spots thoroughly, some bigger complexes take me 2 hrs to fish, and by the time I get around them I may just re-fish Fish will definitely "pack" up that time of year. fishing too slow is better than fishing too fast - IMO Especially for big fish. Good luck

just north of Windigo is certainly a popular area...but probably for good reason. I personally wouldn't even consider going all the way into the Big Narrows, you will be passing up just a ton of fish and countless great spots that you should be learning. Since it sounds like you really want to head North, look no further then Bishops Bay and listen to Justin's advice on what to look for. If you see a boat on a spot then there's probably a good reason why...remember it and go back

also heard that instead of going North you also have thousands of acres to the East to choose from where you will tend to run into less people....but there's no fish out that way so I would never suggest such things

Steve, July is VERY busy at the angle i've fished all over that place in all directions, the only direction we havent fished was east of Oak Island / South of Tug. But from Youngs Bay to Wiley Pt, Monument to Falcon Island it will be busy! Id say Bishop Bay/Big Narrows will be the worst it will remind you of Vermilion. So be prepared.

it's not terrible.. are there community spots that get pounded and will have boats on them a lot, yah, but there are thousands of good spots... last year for example we were driving along on our normal milk run, my buddy Brett has been going up there for a long time, only my 3rd year, but I saw a little weedy bay w some rock, I said "ever fish that", he said "nope" so I said let's try it quick, hit it and i got a ~45 in the 8, there are literally 1000s of spots just like that we don't hit in a given week that can and do have fish on them.... don't be afraid to venture out farther from the crowds...

No worries regarding pressure in my opinion.
Muskie/acre ratio in that area is hard to beat anywhere else.
Can't throw a bad cast in the angle.

Depends on where you are staying? If you're down in the Angle or on Flag or Oak, I wouldn't go any further north than Monument Bay. I've been fishing LOTW for 14 years now, and trust me, there are a lot of fish in Monument Bay. Personally, I would stay away from the Big Narrows. There is no reason to run all the way up there if you are staying further south, and on some days it is like playing leap frog from spot to spot. There is so much water, why fish an area that is loaded with other musky boats?

Like Sidejack said above, you can't throw a bad cast in the angle. If it looks good, fish it!

Agree with this 100%. Lots of boats driving by lots of prime spots only to go play leap frog with other boats in the Big Narrows. The Narrows is one area where pressure can definitely be noticeable. And there's really no need for it…there's plenty of under-pressured water elsewhere throughout the Angle.

Two of the biggest fish I've ever seen on LOTW: 1) A point on Flag Island 2) a point on Oak island......I'll be the first to admit though, I feel like I have to drive 15 miles away to start the day .......have caught some very nice fish right around flag and oak though (where i most commonly stay)

I think feeling like you have to drive far from the cabin or where you are staying is inherent in musky fisherman, look at when you fish lakes on your home waters or on the lake your cabins are on, what do we do, ? put our boat in and then feel the need to run to the other side of the lake! some of the best spots are right by the boat landings, and by the resorts... !
