I thought I would share the story of catching my first musky from my trip home to MN this summer! Talk about a luck!!! It was a great trip, but I have set the bar for myself pretty high… My 3 week trip was cut short due to a family emergency at home. Fortunately, it wasn’t severe and my daughter is fine. I wish she had come with me this year, then you would be seeing a picture of her holding this hawg! Since some will ask for the story, I will give it to ya.
I have been able to fish with a buddy who guides on Vermilion, Paul Pollock. Paul guides part-time on Vermilion and is mainly responsible for my musky addiction. Paul has grown up on Vermilion and still lives on the lake. He knows the lake well and has really shortened the learning curve for me. I started fishing for skies last summer and I wasn’t able to hook any while fishing alone last summer. I missed one that hit while casting a dawg last fall (still haunts me) and went to Cave Run this spring and still wasn’t able to get any to bite, despite having multiple follows and great guides. So, it was a relief to finally boat one. I just didn’t think my first would be this big!
She was caught on the first night we fished. I had just got to MN and was staying over at a buddies place in the cities before heading to my mom’s place. I received a text from Paul that his client had cancelled the next night and that we could fish then, as well as the next 2 nights. So, I went home the next day, visited with my mom for a while and apologetically went fishing that night. Luckily my mom is pretty understanding of my addiction! The first night there was a big storm system to the west that only rained a little on us. Just after sunset some lightning struck fairly close to us and we were considering running in for a while, until the storm passed. Within 30 seconds, I had a big hit. Having never fought a musky, I was surprised by the power of the headshakes. She made a couple runs, but really didn’t fight as hard as I expected, other than the big headshakes. When she got to the boat, I knew she was big, but didn’t think she was as big as she measured! She made 1 tail kick boatside, but easily slid into the net. Since she was my first musky, and such a tank, I was not prepared for holding her. When I was holding her out for a pic, she started to flop, so I just cradled her so I wouldn’t drop her. She released well and swims to be caught by someone else. Even though my trip was cut short, we had a great run. Paul and I boated 6 fish, 3 each, and had several hits. I did lose one that I bet was also 50+, talk about haunting memories! Rookie mistake on that one… Since everyone likes to chime in on their size estimates, I will not post the actual sized until later.

Awesome fish! You said three nights of fishing right?

Just so you'll share the actual sizes, I'll put three numbers out there:

51, 46, 54.

That third one is huge. The way you wrote your story makes it sound like the first was the biggest, but that third fish looks really big from all that length hanging below your left hand.

That's quite the story! You really got the timing right on your trip! I don't even want to guess at the sizes, but those look like 3 very big fish, especially the 1st and 3rd. Congrats on a great trip.

Ya, the first was the bigger one. It's just the angle of the pic and that the first was a fattie. The 1st fish was 54 x 26. Second is 42 and the 3rd was 52 x 22.5 or 23. We couldn't get a good girth as we were measuring in the water and we were drifting fast toward shore.

Congratulations. I have a feeling those trips may become more frequent now.

Congrats. That is definitely a trip you will never forget. Its like the 12 year old shooting a 200 inch whitetail in his first hunt. That will be tough for you to top!!!

Thanks guys! I'm looking forward to the beginning of October when I can go up again. I just hope there isn't another storm that ruins this trip like it did last year!
