| If you had the money to buy one, and already had Humminbird 898 - which would you buy first? 1) iPilot/iLink, or 2) 360 Imaging? | |||

Posts: 2384 Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | Correct. I guess the 360 unit only works if you're standing still so I don't know how many muskie applications you'd really have for it. I think it would be much more effective walleye/panfishing but who knows.

Unless I'm missing something I-Pilot is just a convenience feature. The same things it does can be accomplished with a Fortrex, good depthfinder/GPS, and paying attention. Or am I missing something? The same could be said about fishing reels and rods, you could throw the bait like a base ball and hand over hand to retrieve. But like most items yes it is a convenience. It gives you more fishing time, it turns a average boat control in to above average. Last night i was fishing high wind and the normal drifts were not showing fish. So i used the spot lock feature, We were able sit in one spot with high wind and we lost two at the boat, and got a few follows. We never would have been able to hold our spots with just a manual trolling motor. Convenience Yes, But well worth not stressing over the boat control it is well worth it

Posts: 128 | Why can't what it does be duplicated with a cable motor, good depthfinder/GPS, and paying attention? SI/DI/Structure scan can't really be duplicated. You could get a higher detailed view of whats down there with a high powered depthfinder and underwater camera but you aren't really seeing things away from the boat. It's a convenience to have sure, but it can't be duplicated using some other method. The I-Pilot can. In my view. I'm willing to figure out/learn why I'm wrong.

Posts: 201 | You make valid points smallmouth, but to me the i pilot is something I could never fish without again. I was fishing smallies and muskies in the windy conditions on Sunday. Wind was blowing with the current on the river. I hit the spot lok feature when I hooked a fish and didn't have to worry about getting blown into anything and could concentrate on safely landing the fish. I should mention I fish by myself 90% of the time and that is why I like it so much. Also because I use my front trolling motor to troll for walleyes it is nice to record a track and I can run my 3 rods trolling and not have to worry about the boat when I am by myself. My humble opinion but I would never consider getting a trolling motor without it again, and I loved my old cable trolling motor. Although a talon would be nice.

Try taking your foot off the fortrex and have your trolling motor automatically keep you in a precise spot or follow a previously recorded trail. smbrickner - 9/26/2012 8:30 AM If you don't have I Pilot get it. I dont really see too much benefit to the ILink personally since the mapping is not 100% accurate in the first place. Secondly depending on where the GPS antennae is located in respect to your transducer it will be even less accurate. Case in point, if you have an external puck mounted away from your bowmount and are using a GPS mounted near the bowmount with a US2 sonar, it will be off more than if using internal GPS (or puck) mounted near the trolling motor using US2.

| I hear the Lindners did a lot of filming this summer using both iLink and 360 imaging. Shows will start airing in January and then I guess we can see people using it in action. Still, would prefer to see it in person before I drop the coin, but will be able to at least see something this winter on TV. | |||

Posts: 576 Location: Germantown, WI | does anyone know if the i-link that works with Lowrance HDS units is in the works for next year or the following year maybe? My i-pilot is my favorite toy, but i could see the i-link taking over if it works with Lowrance down the road. The less i have to worry/deal with boat control, the more i enjoy fishing! (did i mention i'm lazy). Edited by dward 9/26/2012 4:50 PM

Posts: 1462 Location: Davenport, IA | You need to find out what is best for you. They're both useful. Personally, I will never have an electric steer trolling motor again. Does that mean they're bad? No, just not for me.
