I'm just wondering if any of you more knowledgable gents would happen to know if there is a place on the web where I can find product reviews giving comparisons or ratings of musky related products especially rods and reels. I've been looking at a lot of equipment here and there but can't seem to be able to figure out which products have proven themselves over time - especialy rods.

thanks for the help

I would definitely agree! All lure mfr's and reps could talk them up and answer any questions.

Was thinking of this just yesterday....would be great to have a forum where we can all give our views on our experiences on different products; be they baits, reels, rods, lines, etc.
IF there is enough interest (ie. people express an interest here) there is a chance that we could bring reps from different companies in to give their views and their ideas, opinions, etc. Tell MuskieFirst if you are intersted, it sounds like a good idea in the making....

Sounds like a great idea to me. How about something like Consumer Reports?
I would be happy to test all this stuff for you guys.
I would also perform this task with minimal salary. I am cheap, but not easy.
More seriously, I do think that such a forum would be fun and informative.

Keep the responses coming, if enough people are interested, I think this could be something very good for the site overall!

Sounds like a good idea to me. With the price of muskie tackle so high, it'd be nice to get a feel for the lure/rod/reel before you plunk down the hard $$$$.

I think that this is a great idea. But I wonder how we go about policing it. In other words, how do we report honest bad experiences with products without starting a bashing fest?

The idea of having manufactures reps come on the site is Ok, but their reports will be biased. I'm not knocking them, that's how they feed their familys, and we all have to eat. But to me the only credible way that this can work without having it become pure advertising is to be able to post honest critisisem (sp?) and to avoid the bashing. Which seem to be at odds with each other.

F-poop,
I agree, a manufacturer will OBVIOUSLY have a biased opinion....this is why I am personally envisioning a place where both users and manufacturers have a voice. And as for bashing, this board as a whole is well moderated, and it seems as though there are only rare occurances of bashing anyways, its the members that moderate themselves and each other more than anything.

Uh Jason.....can we just put up a Forum like the Ashton Forum and go from there? Make it a working work in progress?

Sounds like a great idea to me. Both novice and experienced musky fisherman visit the board. Questions often come up regarding quaility of a product including rods, reels, boats, motors, baits, etc.. It would be great to hear from not only the product reps but also the consumers, the musky fisherman whom use these products on a regular basis.

just a thought here if you would consider making this a site-component.

How about if you do review for products one by one? Say: topraider. Lets hear from everyone what they think of the bait, what they would like to see changed, what is less usefull/could be better, ... How you fish it, ... how well it stands up to the muskies' teeth or the abuse when playing the fish, ...

If you would do this for products one by one in a new thread each time, it could give everyone some good opinions to decide whether to buy a certain lure or rod/reel/line/nets/depthfinder/trolling motor when in doubt. I think that an extra forum would be good and a lot of people will use it. Muskiefirst could set the new direction for forums!

Anybody could start a thread about something (fishing related) they consider buying. And a comparison between certain similar pieces of tackle could be asked. For instance: I have one shimano calcutta and I'm very happy with it. I see there is now a new series called the calcutta TE and I am in the process of looking for a second one to fit on my back-up rod. Why would I buy the TE instead of a regular calcutta? This may get some rational replies. Oh BTW, I'm not looking for a new reel, got one already and I love it! Thanks Mike!!

In the beginning I always wondered which lures to get from the USA online stores or from trades with other anglers because over a year ago I knew very little about most baits. I can now say I know a whole lot more baits because I either read a lot about them or I tried them. I have made a selection of favourites now which I always carry in my tackle box when I go fishing and I add a few new lures each time I go fishing to maybe make my selection more versatile. The ultimate goal is to be able to select which baits to take with me on a certain trip (given the lake and weather/water conditions) without having to carry two boxes of lures because I might try this or that, and in that spot that lure will probably work ... but then again, that one got fish there last time, ... You get the idea. It may help to decide between certain baits, instead of buying them all.

That is the worst idea I have EVER heard in my entire life!!! MOST of the comments are going to be negative. No one is going to log on and post: My bucktail from company X ran O.K. today or WOW my topraider is really pulling smooth. It will be a place that asks for BASHING and nothing besides.

Sorry so blunt.

Yep...Illini,

That is why its not going to be an OPEN forum....the products are going to be tested by say....10 random folks on site.

After much thought, I must agree with the wisdom of Musky Illini and Jason here.....with the propensity of the muskie masses to bash.....I formally WITHDRAW my endorsement of this idea.

It actually could go either way with bashing or constructive criticism. If the bashing gets out of line, then it could be problems. The chats seemed to go okay and not too much of a biased format. I seem to recall I mentioned "all brands" on mine.
