The boss (wife) gave me permission to spend about $250 at the Chicago Show. I need a new reel, and I'm kind of light on dive and rise jerkbaits, and would like to maybe get a few new dbl 10s and maybe a big rubber bait or two.

help me spend my money by giving suggestions!

New Double Dawg - I want the walleye and Gold pattern, just as Spencer posted. I'd say maybe the reel should come first since you'll have trouble casting your new baits without it, but if you have some money left over, grab yourself a couple lures, too

I'd hold off buying at the show until after the Lure Swap. You'll find tons of baits and reels at huge discounts.

250 is not much when you throw in a reel, either get a reel at the swap or ebay has okuma akenas for around 80 bucks, lures I only like to buy custom colors or hard to find baits since you can order most lures online from mto or big wood and shipping isn't much or nothing,or take all your money to the swap and come home with more stuff than you would at the show.

You could burn up the $250 in just a reel?

I'd go Medussa in a custom color. Or custom Cowgirl built in front of your eyes.

Perhaps everybody should hold off buying at the show and spend their money at the swap meet. That way the show venders won’t make any sales and won’t bother coming back next year.

Do you think the show needs the swap meet to be successful or the swap meet needs the show to be successful? I bet you won’t get that many people at the swap meet without the musky show, something to think about.

Double dawgs won't be at the swap, neither will 10" hellhounds.

Mr. Vendor; I visit the musky shows to listen to the seminars. Picking up a tip or 2 is knowledge and key to success. I think it is money well spent.
To go buy lures can be done at any musky shop and it is free to walk into any shop. Why pay $10 or $12 to buy more baits?
Vendors at the musky shows should be there to get exposure to your line of tackle and for sales. I bet most booth costs to vendors are written off as a business expense.

The lure swap and sell is a great way to talk musky and a more relaxed atmosphere for fellow fishers to have a good time. BESIDES, the lure swaps also help in the hunger task force and operation musky vet thing on LOTW.

See ya there......OR NOT!!! DEAL WITH IT!

Oh boy. Personally, I go to the show to buy the newest lures on the market and custom colors of my favorites. Haven't even attended a swap meet. I always just make a day trip to attend the show, get some new toys and talk with vendors, catch a seminar or two and head home. There are enough good deals on the buy/sell forum here.

Steve, I would like to post this response, as I think it is important and that will be the end of it. I am sure you know who I am from my IP and will see you at the show. Name has been changed to protect the innocent.

I fully agree with everything you say and can’t argue with that what so ever. But, and this is a big but, a lot of the smaller tackle manufacturers are just scraping by or making lures to pay for their own fishing, and most still have to have a full time job. So these guys are by no means rich! Do you begrudge the guy who works full time and then works extra hours to make a few bucks to pay for his fishing?

The cost of a booth, hotel, fuel, food etc is easily around $1200.00, do you think it is easy to write that amount off? Have you ever considered what it costs somebody like R&H to be there with all the above expenses and then add staff wages on top of that. If the small lure guys and retailers don’t make money, then it simply is not worth their time and all the hard work. You can’t have a musky showed based purely on seminars, just the same, you can’t have only a show selling stuff.

When you go to the show, have a look around and see how many of the lure manufacturers are small and not owed by some big corporate. I think you will be surprised and perhaps change your point of view.

FYI, there are a lot of lure manufacturers that support the “the vet thing” you talk about.

Everything has a place in the musky world (even swap meets), magazines needs advertisers, advertisers need to sell products and thus it goes on.

The good thing about a swap meet in one way is that it allows some guys to sell used lures they don’t want and then buy new stuff at the show. So I always look for a positive in everything in life.

Well, my shopping list at the show will include a ton of terminal tackle, some double tailed Dawgs, and maybe a few other lures that might be in custom show color that won't be available anywhere else.
My list for the swap will be some more Dawgs (Pounders), DD's, Wabull, maybe a Perchbait

Gonna check out a new trinidad and see if I can justify the expense. In terms of baits-a few red october tubes and rigs, custom double cowgirls, probably a bumpboard, then whatever else catches my eye.

I have a Justencase and some Big Games ordered that I should be able to pick up at the show. Also want to talk to Mike about some more Cedar Creek's. Check out rods and the new Trinidad 16na. And check out any new crankbait I see.
