Well if it is damaged you will have to deal with sending it back, which is usually no big deal. When my phone broke they sent me a packet and I just filled out the info and dropped it in any mailbox. Of course if you lost it, then you dont have to do anything. Just dont claim it was stolen or else you will need to fork over a police report. Just make sure you have the coverage that covers everything especially if you are going to claim you lost it.

I would say that you lost the phone, take the battery out and keep it in a bowl or zip lock bag of rice. Insurance will cover the phone either way.

A few years ago my friend had his cell phone fall down an ice hole on Mille Lacs. We were able to see it on the camera, but couldn't tell if it was ringing when we called it. I told him he could use my phone to call his girlfriend, but he stated he didn't know the number. I asked "You have it written down at home, don't you?" He stated "No!". I then said "Did you just lose your girlfriend?" His response was "YES!!!!" Mille Lacs has broken many hearts!

I have frequently removed the battery and used a hair dryer to evaporate the water inside the phone. Have actually dropped a couple of phones into the toilet and was always able to revive them in this manner.

i did the same thing with a verizon phone ... fell off a dock. told them so, they covered it ... only difference was i had to send it back to them (they provided a handy pre-paid mailer) for verification. no problems ...

I would say, "never" try to think of a story to tell an insurance company. It's not the ajuster's cash, it's his job is to pay claims, and the only way to get on the wrong side of these folks---or have your claim contested (usually) is to give them some idea that you were not honest. Also, the Verizon insurance requires a sworn statement to be signed and it's not worth your integrity to lie for a couple of hundred bucks anyway. Lying should be reserved for explaining how you lost a perfectly well hooked fish or how 51 is really the "new 48." Marty Forman

If it is a Iphone try the rice in the bag trick. My wife dropped her is the sink. We had the protection plan and it still cost $200 bucks to replace. Better $200 than $400 though.

I've put a few cell phones through the washing machine in my dad and I've always taken the battery out and let them dry for a few days and they have worked again for me.

Regarding the insurance claim, I have had a few with Verizon myself and no big deal. Just tell them the truth and you will be fine.

I have AT&T but last year I dropped my phone on some concrete and the screen shattered. Had insurance - called it in and told them exactly what happened - free replacement - $50 deductible. And, they did not have anymore of the phone I had in stock so they sent me an uprgrade at no extra charge. I was very happy with the whole deal. That's what insurance is for - accidents, and that's why I have it on my phone but my wife does not.

Rice in a sealed plastic bag has worked in the past.

Once lost my phone while plowing snow, fell out of my pocket while working on the plow. Didn't relize it was gone until it was too late, pushed into the pile and reported exactly how it happened. Sent a new phone out no problem....after the insurance premium.

Found the original in the spring......pulled the battery, let it dry out.....charged it the next day and it worked. When I trashed the replacement, put the snowbank phone back in service, worked fine until I finally broke it.

Hard on phones......trashed 3 blackberrys in a year and a half until work bought me an otter box. Going strong for a whole 5 months now.

This was a couple of years ago, I had Verizon and the insurance coverage was through assurance or assurant. I ran my cell phone over with my lawn mower. I called and they covered the phone with no questions asked. I had to mail back the pieces and pay a small deductible. At that time they gave you a refurbished phone.

I work for Verizon. You can make a claim it doesn't matter what happens to your phone. All of the insurance is handles through a 3rd party company called Assurion. You can either make the claim online at phoneclaim.com or call in to 1-866-46-5154. I would recommend the online tool it works very slick. You will be charged a deductible so be prepared to pay anywhere from $50-$89 (depending on handset)in order to get your new phone. A lot of times the phone is refurbished but depending on the model and the availibility of refurbs you may get a brand new device.

take the battery out and put it somewhere the sun will find it then plug it in to the charger and turn it on. A phone of mine had sat in a pool for at least 15 min and this worked for me.

so if you have to pay $50-89 deductible plus $150 over 24 months for insurance and you end up getting a refurbished phone, how is that worth it? If you're like Hodag Hunter or have a smart phone, I can understand. But most of the time they act like you're an idiot for not getting insurance on a flip phone.

cjrich, remind me not to borrow your phone.
