I am torn between the two hulls. Which should I get. I really don't fish big water so the 620 could be overkill, but I have heard the 619 is a 'wetter' hull. Anyone have a comparison.

Get a 620.

Overkill is what musky fishing is all about.

Get the biggest boat you can afford.

I would say, get the right boat for the job I guess...If you don't fish "big" water, why either one of these boats? If you don't fish big water, you won't need to worry about a "wetter" ride. Give me any walleye/muskie type boat in the lower 20' class on big water in wind and waves and the only thing that will keep the water at bay is a good captain coupled with an even better rainsuit.
If you exclusively musky fish on smaller waters, why not a bass boat?
Without knowing your other reasons for choosing between these 2 boats, I would say go with the 620 as I would always go for length for a bit of a smoother ride...but that is on big water....Good Luck!

If you are looking for a used boat, go with the 620. The previous model 619's rode hard as a freight train.

My friend has an '06 620 and it takes alot of water over bow when trolling or casting in anything above 2ft waves. The so called dry storage leaks terrible. Be careful with 620. Heard the same from others. If you want a 620 look for 04 or 05 models

How much does your "friend" weigh? LOL!

Anything above 2 footers? I will credit you for one thing, this may be the first time someone has underestimated wave height...

As with all boat threads, some "guest" will start bashing brand ABC!

Believe it Wade. I used a new 06 620 for the Merc Nats two years ago. We literally had gallons coming over the bow while just sitting in 2-2 1/2 footers, waiting for the start. Not a bash when it's true.

That said, there's a pretty nice looking deal on an 07 619 in the classifieds.

I second the thoughts on the 06 and newer 620 hull. I couldn't believe how much water would come over the bow in not so big waves with the newer hull. Very noticible compared to riding in my 05. However, the newer hulls are faster and seem to offer slightly better handling at higher speeds in a 1' chop or less. my .02

i got a 20' ranger ... love it when i need it (eagle, mille lacs, vermillion etc...), but honestly would like to have a smaller boat more often than not ...

be very aware of what you use it for and then try to match the need ...

good luck with your choice ... wish i was facing the same problem! ... lol

My experiences in an '06 620 were completely different. I can recall fishing Oconto one spring day with a strong SE wind. Never once did anything come over the bow. So as not to exaggerate, I will just say solid 3's. Anyone who has fished out of Oconto in strong SE winds knows it doesn't take much to get that area boiling. So....I guess we have had different experiences....that said, I REALLY like the colors on that '07 619 in the classifieds.

I hate to jump in here, but I've had the same experience with the newer 620's. I took the bow on my friends 620 a hand full of times this summer on tonka and couldn't believe how many wakes came over. Honestly more came over the bow of the Ranger then come over on my bass boat. My bass boat sits nose high vs. the Ranger that's more level in the water.

That being said, I think the new 620 is a much better casting platform then the old one. The storage, handling and speed are also better. It reminds me of driving a big, fat bass boat vs. the barge that the 05's and older were.

What year 620 were you in on your BIG trip out of Oconto? Do you know the differences between the hull and boat design of a 2005 vs. 2006 620? Do you know the difference between a 2' wave and 3’ footer, I wonder? Have you tried holding your boat on a spot while casting into the wind? Or are you a walleye guy that trolls in only one direction - With The Waves Only? Before you go and bash a "GUEST" you might take into consideration how one fishes and make sure you have your facts in place before you pass judgment on a guest. Not all guests B.S. when the info is factual.

Both Wisconsin Wade and Shep know what they are talking about when discussing big water. Just different viewpoints, perhaps.

I am chuckling as I type this...

I didn't say it was a BIG trip, I was just recalling an experience in an '06 620 where the waves were larger...A buddy had one that I fished out of about a 1/2 dozen times.

Yes, I know the difference between the hull designs. I also have friends with older model 620's.

In my experience, folks tend to exaggerate wave height. I think that I try to be more conservative.

Yes, I have casted in wind and waves and trolled with waves and against them...but I rarely troll against them.

I have fished with Shep in the past and will fish with Shep in the Future..he and I disagree on a variety of subjects. Politics, economics, truck brands, car makes and models..etc. etc....I think it makes for a fun day of fishing.

With all that said, it looks like I am outnumbered regarding waves coming over the front...so...The End for me on this thread.

Don't know if anyone caught the Musky Hunter episode yesterday with Saric and Heckel. Camera pans toward the front of the boat and a big roller comes crashing in over the bow all over Saric's front deck and Lowrance. Recalling this thread, I simply laughed... lol

do you want a casting deck that's close to the water for ease ... or do you want to stay bone dry? ... how many times will you experience x, y and z? .... get a high-sided gunnel front and it's a pain in the butt to work at boatside, but you might be drier in extreme situations ... it's not a perfect world and unfortunately you are not allowed to have your cake and eat it too.

give me a shallow gunnel and close proximity to the water up front any day .... i won't die getting my feet splashed.

Just as Mike's original port - I too was wondering the differences between the 620 and 619. Lots of posts about the 620's and the hull differences for the 620. Any 619 owners out there?? If so, are you satisfied or wishing you had stepped up to the 620?

jonnysled, that is exactly what I am weighing out.

AaronSands, thanks for clarifying. That was my real question. I sure didn't want this to go down the road it went.
