Location: north central wisconsin | I usually don't do this sort of thing, but thought a couple of these new Rylures were worthy of showing off. Pretty unique stuff. Very cool soundng topwater lures, many of which are slight twists to things that he already makes, but very cool takes on them.
The first couple are leggy creeper customs(pics don't do this one justice). The next is a Buckdancer, which is a tapdancer/bucktail hybrid(tail clicks too..cool!). Next is an injured Wobbler(hawg wobbler type lure with sideways perch shape/paint and bloodshot eyes). Next is a version of the old Crazy Crawler, and the wings really BEAT. Another leggy creeper(Mark Ihhssen owns this one now), and lastly a couple custom jointed creepers that really looked cool in the water(Brule from this board ordered these, or I would have bought).
Ryan plans to make short runs of these over the next few weeks. (715) 213-2056

Location: north central wisconsin | k-bob, the leggy is not quite 6" total. The thing really walks nicely too(I was skeptical at first but surprised with how good it looked). That lure is really going to get chewed this summer! It is through wire as well. The Crazy Crawler type lure is about 4.75". It beats a bit faster than the typical creeper with the shorter fatter wings. I worked it pretty fast, and it really looked like an injured bird trying to scurry.
Bill, Don't worry about it, give him a call. (715) 213-2056. He'd love to hear from you. The creeper you are talking about(jointed one, though custom shaped unlike a F&C), is one he just started making. I asked for some creepers with tighter tolerances in the joint awhile back, and others gave some ideas too. This version of his popular 'Creepin Wobbler' has slightly more chatter in the action than the actual fetch shape, and should prove to be a good one in a bit more chop while the original remains a mainstay calm water fav. Both are neccessary items in my box.......(as wife rolls her eyes).
The injured wobbler works just like a hawg wobbler, though rides just a touch lower(right in the surface). The oversized prop in back really helps churn the water and gives the audible chatter that we all love.
The buckdancer is really one that is going to make a splash, as it takes the cool aspects of a few lures. What I like is the fact that one can work it fairly slow and still keep it up, and clacking.
Again, these lures are customs, and not going to be part of his normal set that will be seen at stores and most shows. Though he plans to take a few of each to a couple shows, these particular models will be available through special order. Prices are quite reasonable too, for custom topwater. |

| The leggy frog one is exactly like the one I showed Ryan this summer. Last time I show Ryan any baits. I guess I learned my lesson!

Location: north central wisconsin | Actually Ryan made a legged creeper for me about 3 years ago. He started making a few more this past spring(he said the only one you showed him was your straight kryptonite). I think Evan Kolsted(Evs musky lures) has been making legged creepers for quite a few years, and I have a picture of an antique bass style legged one from what appears to be many years ago. Each has a slightly different take on the design which is cool in my eyes, as I love variety. I would really love to get one of yours too! That said, Ryan does not plan to make many of them, and do so by special order only as they are a realy pain(timewise) to make by hand.
I am sure you hold the utmost respect for Ryan Ty, as he does you. Heck, if it was not for his Tapdancer with the clicky tail that you got from him 8-10 years ago, you would not have had the basis for the Pacemaker, which I know has been a good seller for you(I know I have bought several). He was thankful that you asked permission to duplicate the a$$backwards though(rough runner), and is excited about your revamping of it. Both of us would like to get one of them. You have taken steps to produce lures in mass quantities, and get them out there for the public, and we all thank you for it. The pacemaker is still one of my best producers, as it has a slightly different sound than Ryans weighted, louder, equally effective tapdancer. Ryan is a basement bait guy, and always will be, making small batches of lures by hand, and plans to keep doing it that way, though hopes to make a few more than he used to in order to get a good supply to some of the shows this winter. |

| Jason, I'm sure lots of people have done creepers with attached legs. No big deal. It does look just like the one Kolsted makes. Your right. Just looked exactly like the one in the bottom of my boat when Ryan came over. No big deal. You are not in the right about where the idea for Pacemakers came from though. Corey Meyer and I used clicking tailbaits before Ryan made baits. I bought a bait that Ryan made back in the mid-nineties because he didn't like the sound it made. He screwed up assembling it and put the screw back too far. He was going to throw it out. It made the same sound Corey and I already were using. Did Corey and I start the tail clicking noise. Heck no!!! Neither did Ryan. I've talked to guys that have been doing that for years and years. I was just the first to retail them. I've told you this before but Ryan is your friend and you'll defend him to the end. It really doesn't matter one way or another. As long as we all pay taxes we never get rich making baits anyway. There are so many basement lures out there that are awesome that never hit the water. Gail Oxley has the best baits never used.

Location: north central wisconsin | I didn't remember. That is good to know, and ironic/neat at the same time, that ryans 'dud' happened to get into your hands. Glad it did, as you made a good thing from it, and the lure you and Corey built. He always did say that you really liked the clacking ones more than the standard back in the day. The day I met Ryan, he was tossing a clacking tapdancer(that is how I met him as I asked what it was), and I thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever heard. I think I spent my whole paycheck on his lures that day.
In the end, it really doesn't matter to me who is making the lure, as long as it works and most importantly is available to buy more of. Heck, Ryan wasn't making alot of lures for a few years when he was going through a tough period in his life. Thats about the time the pacemaker came out and I bought a pile of em'(and I mean a pile!), and they treated me very well as you know. I have sung their praises over the years too, and turned lots of friends and local club members onto them. Luckily ryan started making lures again, and his are a bit different. In fact, at a recent club meeting, I showed members both your lures and his, and told them how each one is a different and unique handy tool to have along.
As far as the creeper thing goes, there are so many good ones out there now, and as you said, some of the best ones never see the water. I will assure you that Ryan is not trying to step on toes with any design. He has hundreds of lures in his basement that are either half one lure, and a third of another, or more likely just plain halfa$$. We talk at night, and(as he says) I really come up with some wierd ideas, and luckily he can duplicate most of them in lure form. Most flop, but smetimes a real gem emerges. I just picked a few that I thought were cool to show here. As a topwater junky, I just feel fortunate to have him living nearby to recreate some of my ok surface lures into something 'just right'.
It was my idea to put the pictures of the lures on this thread. Just thought they were too neat not to have others see. He's gotten a dozen or so phone calls regarding his lures, fom excited people who have never seen or heard of them, so I am glad it helped a bit.

| Reefhawg, I've used Ryan's baits quite a bit in the past and have put a lot of fish in the boat with them. He is one of the best manufacturers out there. If he still needs help with taxes tell him to call Cee Cee's tax service in Hayward. She is very good with dealing with lure companies. Last time I talked to him he didn't know who to go to. She will help him out.

Location: nationwide | Thanks for mentioning me in the development of the Pacemaker Ty. You know me, I am always thining topwater!!!!!! I consider you to have one of the best "ears" when it comes to topwater lures and their sounds and still like to run different designs by you for your opinion.
And yes I will get you a spoonman before the 06 season opens.

Location: Hastings, mn, 55033 | in my opinion anyone that hand builds their lures (not just assembles, but turns the bodies, paints etc) shouldnt be accused of "copying" another. just looking at the lures posted (which by the way look GREAT!!) who has the right to say they arent works of craftsmenship beyond repraoch? yet as has been mentioned, others were building legged creepers like that, the bucktail bait is nothing but a vairaition of a hairy bug or musky buster which are nothing but variations of the old musky monk. any lure with soldered loops, and especially creepers with soldered wings and hardware, are take offs from frenchy lamays contruction techniques, but i WOULD NEVER say guys the likes of mr oxley, wick, tesch, jenkerson etc etc etc are copiers. they all bring a unique take to their baits, whether they only make the "standards" like globes, thumpers, creeper etc, or are known for their unique lures which combine a couple other types.
at any rate, the only builders i feel deserve to be looked at as "copiers" are ones who take anothers bodies to a wood shop and have actual duplicates made of anothers work, or somebody (the guy on ebay selling weagle knock offs comers to mind) who uses another baits reputation to market their own by dropping that name more than theirs.. |

if gale wouldnt paint 'em so pretty they wouldnt look so good hanging in the case, and might find there way back to the water. on the other hand who doesnt like pretty?! |
