Location: Contrarian Island | when they are in a position to either hurt you or the fish while unhooking.... Knipex have been a god send on some hooked fish...everyone should have a pair in their boat...a replaced hook is alot cheaper than replacing a dead musky or a hook in your hand...

Posts: 2427 Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | I will give the fish about 2-3 good shakes, if it doesn't pop lose, I grab for my cutters right away. I cut a lot of hooks. If the fish doesn't come unpinned within about 8 seconds, it is snip snip.

Posts: 92 | Hooks are cheap! Big Muskies are an investment of time, energy and money. So cut hooks anytime it's easier for you and better for the healthy release of the fish. Jim Stroede

Posts: 20255 Location: oswego, il | Anytime it will aid in getting the fish unhooked faster. I will even cut hooks from the net to get at the fish, especially if the fishe's head is hooked high in the net and it is out of the water. It is all about doing it in a timely manner. Hooks are cheap.

Posts: 4266 | Unless I can see every hook and be assured that I can unhook the fish in seconds, I start cutting right away. I net the fish and pin the bag against the boat and just start cutting. The hooks in the fish do less damge that the hooks out of the fish I think. Too many times they will spin and thrash and get stuck by a dangling hook, or so will I. I've seen fish that were hooked in the corner of the mouth roll in the net and wind up with a hook in or real close to the eye......or I wind up getting scraped and almost hooked. The hell with it. Hooks are cheap. Cut, cut, cut and then lift the hookless lure out and pull out any pieces left behind. It only has to happen once to open your eyes. Beav

I usually have no problem getting the hooks out right away with needlenose pliers, but you must have Knipex hook cutters ready to cut hooks should you have any difficulty at all. They are especially helpful if hooks get tangled or hooks are near something vital on the musky or you ![]() Never leave the landing without Knipex. Many people have learned that leason the hard way, luckily not me ![]()

Posts: 19 | I found the most useful time to use the hook cutters is when you have a Magnum Dawg hanging from your mellon from an errant cast from a "buddy" in your boat. I thought my 619 was big enough for three people but I better sell and get the 621. Later Troy
