| I have never used planer boards before and it seems there are many different brands to choose from. I am looking for recommendations on a good brand.

maybe someone could say something about them ? for now all the one i have used were not good for big lures at high speed.it was not moving far enough from the boat |

Location: Eastern Ontario | I use the Church Walleye boards they pull anything I want in up to about 2.5 foot waves. I had the TX44 boards but sold them because I like the smaller ones better. In big waves I like a mast and big double boards also when alone the big boards means you don't have to remove an inline board. I modify my inlines with the locking front clip which I also glue little rubber pads to. I also change the back plastic pin to one I make out of 1/8 stainless rod with a 90 deg. bend and a couple of strokes with a hacksaw to hold the clip that retains the spring. You can put your line behind this pin spin the board a couple of times then put your line in the front clip the board will not slide. Don't do this with the plastic pins. Some wrap the line once around the front clip,I have had both Church and Offshore clips damage braid which is why we but the rubber pads which are slightly larger than the clips. If you habitually run the same lead length behind your boards like I seem to do watch carefully that spot on your line. The braid seems to crush and I don't know if it's weaker but I don't want to take that chance.
You can now get the Church boards with the locking clip all ready installed. |

Yes. Those will pull pretty much anything you want until you get to ridiculously monstrous lures. |

how far from the boat would go a depthraider or perchbait ? if you have never try these ones ,could you give an example of the one you troll with ? |

Location: oswego, il | I have church boards, walleye and tx 44 and like them alot. I did modify and upgrade them though. All are upgraded with the metal rear release pin. I upgraded all of them to the offshore locking clip and arm. It is much easier to use than the church locking clip. All of them can slip with braid and i still have to sometimes double wrap. I have not used the big offshore board. I really like how well the church boards work and can be taken off the line very quickly. |

Location: oswego, il | I have used the smaller offshore boards before and liked the shower curtain clip on the back end for easy on and off. Something to consider. You want to be able to get the board off as quickly as possible, muskies can swim forward, creating slack line, the faster the board comes off the less chance of a musky making a slack line headshake. |

Location: Northern Illinois | Thanks. I have the smaller Off Shore boards and they work well with smaller cranks and ok with bigger (reg. depth raiders) but not as well when waves get bigger. Might try the bigger Off Shore. |

Location: Eagle Lake Vermilion Bay, Ontario | no question for an inline board system off shore products are tough to beat.
the reg size (OR12 planer) is easy to use and a good choice for reg sized baits less than 10" or so and less with non extremly hard pulling deep diving lips or big blade baits. they are easy to run and dont pull to hard when bringing in still attached to your line. also a good choice if you want to double as a multi species board too.
the OR37 SST PRO MAG is a bigger board yet still inline board that will handle just about anything, big baits ,hard pulling deep divers, any size blade even inline or snap weights to 8 oz+ and runs well out to the side in high seas and rough water even with oversize baits
i rarely set boards to release on strike . having to chase a board after the fact or if set to slide down to leader and having it flopping around in a fishes face at net time has many potential problems.
for a positive holding release on either board regardless if mono from 10-40# or braid from 20-100# switch the original orange or red front clip (OR 8 or OR 18) on the front bracket to the big black OR18 adjustable snapper cam release. even lighter superlines and big hard pulling baits in rough water and big waves will stay secure in this release.

Location: Wisconsin | Church boards. Don't have to worry about losing a board, especially in big water. I have as well upgraded my releases to the Church Board Clip, which Fleet Farm in some locations have, but here is the link. I troll with braid and this clip has never slipped.

This has two sides and adjustable tension. I can have it set for Walleye running and then tighten them down and pull anything for Muskies in waves no problem. I have tried a ton of clips including Offshore (which is a pain to release), Gators, even those KrazyWolf ones and those green ones. |

Location: SE Wisc | There are no perfect boards. They all require additional tinkering. Hopefully in the next few years they will come out with something revolutionary, especially with the popularity of open water trolling now. |
