There are so many threads on equipment used for pounders and tens that I thought just for the helluva of it, I would ask what your rod and reel combo is for casting deep diving crankbaits? Let's stay with casting, not trolling. Plenty of info on trolling already. Kdawg

I used a Thorne's Predator MH 8'6 with a Calcutta 400b...loved the action with the tip. Wasn't too light and wasn't too stiff. I threw a ton of depth raiders both jointed and straight.

big nasty full grip with the handle extended to 19" and a revo toro 5.4:1. I fish deep cranks more often than anyone I know and this is my go to setup for nearly every crankbait in the box. I have several favorites, but the rod allows you to hold the bait down to attain greater depths as well as keep the bait below the surface on figure 8's. Many deep crankbaits that are designed for trolling blow out on a figure 8 so a longer rod to keep the bait down is necessary to me.

Depends onthe size of the Cranks. Smaller stuff 4-6 inches I may use a MH Pred with a 300 D. Medium Cranks I use a Slingblade with a 400 TE on it. 10 -14 inch crnaks I use a Big Nasty with a 400D on it or a Xh Pred with a HG Tranx..

For medium size cranks (6-10" depth raiders, triple Ds, Jakes, etc) I have had great success using a Slingblade rod with a Calcutta d. For cranks larger than that I tend to troll.

Are you guys having more success on deep crankbait with fast retrieve reels like both Tranx or more with something similar to the 400B's 24 ipt?

To return to the post's subject, Big Dawg + Tranx PG will be my combo for next year deep crankbaits.

I've been using a 9' XH TI rod for them and many other baits. I like that the rod has a little give in the tip to keep fish pinned up but a good backbone for working and ripping the baits as well.

Maybe it comes from walleye fishing but I feel like a little give in the tip can give a little more consistent hookups as well.

I use, my LT Big Dawg, with a tranx Hg, or abu 7000, depending on what speed i wan't.
This year i'm going to give the mark Lijewski xxxxh a go, to see if the stiffer rod tip will make it easier to twitch the big cranks.

tackle industries XH 9 rod with a full grip and pair it up with a 400b. You will love these TI rods. Great rods and don't break the bank.

I love my TI's for crankbaits. I don't throw anything huge so I'm usually tossing a MH or XH.

Hvy Predator 9', 2" off the tip w/ 400D for most lures.

For the really big stuff, (14" Jakes, etc) 9-6 XXH Predator with Tranx PG. The reel alone can rip the baits, making fishing these things far less work than you would think.
