Posts: 117 Location: champaign, illinois | Limited open water at best, none near any ramps that I know of. There is supposed to be a xmas tree planting this next Saturday but it looks like it'll get pushed back a couple more weeks due to ice. Posts: 117 Location: champaign, illinois | The xmas tree plantings are (were) scheduled for this weekend at (jerryb is not going to like this... :-)) Lithia Springs Cove. There is an ice date but I don't have it handy (IIRC it's like the second Saturday in March, but I'll post the correct date if anybody is interested in helping out). Posts: 117 Location: champaign, illinois | I called, it's official, the date for the xmas tree planting has been postponed due to ice, the new date is Saturday March 8 at the Lithia Springs boat ramp. I've done this in the past and it is a lot of fun and not too much work. Plus they give you a map of where the trees are planted and feed you a chili lunch after. Posts: 117 Location: champaign, illinois | You will have to treat me very, very nicely! The best way to get the map is to help out with the planting of the trees. After the work is done all workers meet at a specified location where they serve chili and soda and pass around the MASTER map of where they dropped in the trees. From that you mark up your own copy (copied prior to the planting) from the master. I have many years worth now transferred to MY MASTER Lake Shelbyville map. BTW, the tree planting will AGAIN be postponed due to ice (I am getting extremely tired of this winter!), but I have not heard it "officially" announced yet. Posts: 117 Location: champaign, illinois | I just received a call from one of our club members who told me that you could launch at Lithia and fish open water until about Buoy cove where it is still iced over to the south, and then up north to Coon Creek before it get's iced over again. The big news isn't the lake though, ANOTHER big musky (49.5", over 30lb on boga) was caught and kept to be mounted by the angler in the spillway. My source also said that a guy using small boat (12-14' w/trolling motor) tied up to the cable at the head of the spillway has caught lot's of muskies in the past few days. 5 one day with 12 additional follows and 7 the next day with over 20 additional follows. Limit's of walleye's are also available to the shore fisherman also (go at night when the crowd thin's out). Posts: 688 Location: Northern IL | While it's great to catch fish in a barrel, just more proof that the clubs and state are wasting $$$ putting these migratory fish in lakes with no barrier.

Posts: 117 Location: champaign, illinois | Will you folks PLEASE check facts before you regurgitate the need for barrier nets!!! Two dams I am familiar with are Shelbyville and Evergreen... Evergreens dam has been modified (raised) once to make a 500+ acre lake into a 950+ acre lake. The dam structure would be compromised by adding a barrier net as stated by structural engineers. Go ahead, place the net, lose a lake! Shelbyville reservoir was built as a flood control reservoir thereby necessitating a sluice type dam. The water runs THROUGH the dam, not over it. Just how do you propose to put a "barrier net" without drowning fish? While there is a recovery program in place on Evergreen, and now fishing is limited in the pool below, it is not cost effective to do the same at Shlebyville because of the high rate of stocking there (as per Mike Mounce the lake biologist). I am EXTREMELY PLEASED those fish are down there. Why take away the chance for shorebound anglers to catch a fish and become a muskie fanatic? We have club members who joined for that very reason! And I am talking families, not just one or two guys. Fishing in a barrel you say, have you ever tried? You ought to SEE the dedicated musky anglers down there. One guy uses a fly rod exclusively! AND THEY WILL TURN YOU IN FOR SNAGGING so don't start that bit of heresay... Jay Lake Shelbyville Muskie Club and Illinois Muskie Tournament Trail www.illmuskie.com

Posts: 197 Location: N Illinois | Jay, It just seems that a high number of fish go downstream. I am sure alot of money and effort go into stocking Shelbyville. It just appears it's like flushing money down the drain, for a percentage of fish are lost downstream.

Posts: 117 Location: champaign, illinois | Lost, or recycled as a flowing water resource? I'd vote for the latter... You can small boat/canoe float the river below the dam. There are also a few (very few) public access points along the way. So I ask the question again, who needs a boat (large musky/multi-species type) to catch muskies? There are some very astute stream (and bank)fisherfolks out there that don't want to put up with pressured lakes. Our club is in the process of signing up a guy who bank fishes Evergreen and has caught more fish per year than anybody else I know, boat or not! Stealth counts! Also, there is some very nice stream/river fishing in other states, why exclude Illinois from being one of them, especially considering the size these (spillway) fish are?
