Posts: 1828 | My two-year-old daughter has logged about 13 hours muskie fishing with me this summer. Split that into five outings and you see that those are some pretty short trips. Each time out she finds more ways to stay occupied, she gets into it a little more, and lasts a little longer on the boat. We've made it [from after work] till sunset twice now, so I pretty much have it made. Somehow I manage to hook, then lose, at least one every times she's with me. Well tonight, finally, I buried hooks into one that made it to the net. It was tiny, of course, but I like to think of it as *just right* for the occasion. As it slid into the net, I looked at Arie and said "well, it's small, but we finally got one." She said, "No dad, that's a BIG muskie!" It was the right size for this picture. Short enough that I didn't cut off most of it off with the self-taken camera-phone method, small enough that it didn't freak her out, yet big enough that, in her eyes, it's a "BIG muskie". It will be interesting to see if she'll pose for a pic with a decent sized one next time. 30", and believe it or not, not quite the smallest one this year... Attachments ---------------- ![]()

Posts: 1828 | On the way to the lake, I asked her if she thought we'd catch any. She said yes, two. Coincidentally I hooked a decent one in the figure-8 fifteen minutes after landing the dink, but lost it before I had the net ready. She looked up at me, eyes squinted and head cocked, "Oh Dad, you lost it?" It's a whole new kind of fun with her out there. Tougher and slower-going in some ways, of course. But I wouldn't trade it. Sorry the pic is sideways. It shows up correctly on my phone, but just noticed from the computer it's screwed up.

Posts: 1828 | Flambeauski - 8/13/2013 3:14 PM Great pic! How do keep her from getting underfoot? Mine is fascinated with the foot pedal on my trolling motor. Tried books and games but she always ends up at my feet playing with that pedal. Yup, same issue here. I just let her drive the boat. She leads me to fish, so I have no complaints. Seriously though, that's probably the only thing that actually frustrates me a little. It becomes a fun game to her when I "yell" at her for steering the boat the wrong way, or tripping me, or getting stuck between my ankles. Also, she always poops when the action is getting good. The best distractions are: - suckers (the candy, not the bait. Although the bait would provide at least an hour of entertainment too) - livewell full of water. minnows in it, even better. - iphone. But she's only allowed to use that while sitting on the floor between the consoles. - fishing with her barbie rod. She hasn't even thrown it overboard yet.

Posts: 4343 Location: Smith Creek | Thanks for the tips! In regards to pooping, mine (after she was potty trained) really enjoys going over the gunnel while I hold her hands. So much so that she asks to go potty over the side of the boat while it's sitting in the garage.

Posts: 1828 | Well she's basically a seasoned veteran now. We braved Friday's stiff winds by hugging the leeward shore (where I feared there were no fish) and got this one in the figure-8. She actually got to see the strike since she was standing at my feet and holding my leg for balance. I calmly asked her to move to the back of the boat so I could guide the fish to the net. That makes two muskies that she's witnessed in the boat, and this one didn't even freak her out at all. I think this was the first time she's been out with me since we got one in August.
