This is probably a chevy / ford question, but I am undecided on three reels. I am just getting into Muskie fishing. I have a few older St. Croix Legend rods and 6500's , but neet a newer up to date rig. I will probably cast for Muskies 4 or 5 timees a year so I am looking for an all-around rig. I am looking at a Revo Toro, Calcutta 400B or Luna. Will I be sorry with a Toro Winch 60 for an "all around" reel? Is the Calcutta more durable than the Luna? Any help is appreciated.

Posts: 128 | Ive had terrible luck with my calcutta Te. My brother and friend have a luna and love them but then again ive heard that from other people about all those reels.. put names in a hat and draw pick your fate that way

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | The Toro Winch and the 400B and the Luna are all fine reels, if you can handle each reel at a store and see which one feels right for you. The Toro Winch comes with a Power Handle and is my favorite of the bunch.

Is the winch too slow to work bulldawgs, and topwater prop baits?

Posts: 375 | i used my two lunas for 4 years and when i sold them they were working like they did when they were brand new...great..and i never had any problems with them what so ever! the only reason i sold them is because i bought a couple of smaller profile curado 301's and i find them MUCH more comfortable to palm and their lighter weight is also an added plus. i throw every bait / every weight with the 301's except double tens which, in my opinion, are little much for the 6.2:1 ratio, so i just don't throw them...

Posts: 147 Location: Northern New Jersey | i dont know much about these reels as i am just getting into muskie fishing. for the bit i have fished though i realized round reels and my hands arent a very good match. id suggest, like others, to go into a store and try them all out before you buy. they are all a great product (theoretically), so you just need to figure out what you want. i think tackle warehouse website does loaner reels and maybe they have one you can test out

Posts: 375 | what "all skis" said...i should have mentioned this in my reply above...i also own a revo toro 51 with the 5.4:1 ratio and it is even a better all purpose reel than the curado if you want to throw db 10's just occasionally and from what i recall, i think it is even a little easier to crank a double 10 with the revo 5.4:1 than it was with my lunas for whatever reason...

Posts: 265 Location: Manitowish Waters WI | I own three revo toros which meet all my needs, an hs, 5:4:1, and a winch. The regular revo toro 60 is by far the best all around reel I have ever owned.

Posts: 380 Location: Michigan | I have Curado 301's for JB rods, and 400 TEs for most everything else. Used Lunas for 3 years, and blew up one of them. They feel good, but was not happy on the failure. Have about 5 years on TE's with no issues. Same with Curados. Toro's are nice and i have 2, but personally think they are too wide, and feel a bit cumbersome.

May be able to order one or go to the store and get one. I know of a few people that have done this in the last week or so.

Posts: 1906 Location: Oconto Falls, WI | I have had nothing but problems with my Luna. The anti-reverse continually goes out on it, and I am through my second bearing on the reel that causes it to scream while casting. The only reel I have had issues with the bearing rusting on which cause the problem (so told by Daiwa). By the way they will not fix the bearing under warranty. Of all the various brands of reels I have used the Shimano’s hold up the best. My 400B’s are the workhorses, as well as my TE for the larger baits. No anti-reverse slipping issues with Shimano due to their design. The one problem I know of with Shimano reels though is on occasion you will have a drag washer crack in half or explode in the reel. I can’t speak to the Toro reels as the only one I have is a lefty so it sees limited use. As far as anti-reverse bearings slipping on reels. For most people it happens due to their style of fishing. Lots of ripping and jerking of baits (cranks and rubber) is what will eventually make them slip. If you don’t plan on fishing that way you won’t see many issues with it. If you want to go a bit cheaper on a reel since you will only use it 4-5 times a year don’t overlook the Shimano Cardiff.
