Typically for stained water I know that most opt to use very bright, gaudy colored and/or high contrast colored baits.  I would do this on any clear/sunny day when fishing stained water.  i.e., chartreuse, black, bright orange, etc, etc.

Would you also throw these same colored baits during cloudy/rainy conditions on a stained water lake?  If not, what would you use and why...?

It stained water I tend to stick with bright colors no matter the conditions. If the fish aren't biting however i may switch to a more natural pattern and see if that changes anything.

bright colors absolutely work well on the dark water regardless of what the sun is doing, in fact sometimes a bright color will do even better on a darker day then a bright one, especially holds true in a lot of Northern Wi lakes we fish...

Brian:

Thanks for that... I've been scouring the Internet trying to find an answer or at least a general consensus.  I've got a few really nice bright colored baits in my arsenal that I'll stick with and see how it goes.

Things that make a little more noise seem to make a difference as well, I added a spinnerbait rattle to a bucktail once and ended up with a 12 fish day, granted only 2 were over 30.

Black. Orange accents.

Sue likes Pink in the dark water. She does well on that color, too.

Thanks, everyone...

I got a nice 'n bright double 10 bucktail with fluorescent pink blades and pink 'n silver flashabou that sounds like it would be a good candidate.  I've got plenty of black w/orange, as well.

Would like to try a Rattlin' Undertaker for the noise element... I'll need to get one of these.  Anyone have one of these?  If so, how do you like it?

I fish a dark water lake a lot. Last year, we noticed whenever it was cloudy, if your bait didn't have chartreuse on it, you weren't going to see fish. That held up all last season and 2 trips this season. We've tried other colors and haven't even gotten a follow.
I do have a black rattling Undertaker I would trade or sell. It moves too slow for me.

Thanks for the additional replies, you guys!

I just got a couple of really nice jerkbaits with a ton of flourescent orange and orange accents so it sounds like I'll be throwing these quite a bit.

k-bob:

Thanks for the info. I'm going to try and track down a Rattlin' Undertaker with a lot more bright accents. I'll pass on the all black, but I appreciate the offer. I'll see if I can get a few more baits with some chartreuse in it, as well.

Thanks again!

Good morning Scott,

I like thowing what I call very clean white. I guess you could say a color that resembles a bleached white tee shirt. I like bucktails with a large profile in stained water. Along with that I like orange with black dots. I don't know why the black dots but the contrast seems to work well in stained water. In fact now that I'm sitting here and thinking about it. All of the lures that I throw in stained water have very extreme contrast. Black and white, orange and brown, and black and chartruese. Anyhow contrast your colors.

Really appreciate the reply... I'm going to go through my box tonight and bring only very loud and gaudy contrasting bait colors.  I've got a lot of "natural" colored baits (perch, walleye, etc, etc.) but it doesn't sound like they're the colors to be throwing on this type of lake.

One thing to consider is what stained water does to the color of fish. I know alot of the largemouth bass, walleyes etc.I catch in dirty water appear really white in color. I have had luck with bright or black colors but for white and a little chart. for contrast along with double nickle blades trippes there trigger for sure hope it helps.
