| What do you guys think of split grips? |

The thinner diameter rod bruises my side, the handles look retarded if you try to extend them (I like 18-20" of rod behind the reel seat, not the typical 14"), there rod is more out of balance due to less cork and epoxy (little amount does seem to make a difference to me). That is enough to keep me from buying another one. |

Location: Kodiak, AK | I got my first one by accident. I ordered a regular grip and then sent a split grip. I needed that same day as I was leaving for a trip, so I just kept it, and now I like them and have since bought a Big Dawg split grip. I like them. They don't bruise my ribs, but maybe that's just all the fat and grissle I have protecting me. So I guess I'm in between "No difference" and "Love them." I like them, but not enough to try to convince someone to get one because I love them so much. |

Not for me. I have a couple spinning split grips from Okuma, and really like them. I don't have any Muskie sized split grip rods, but do have a split grip bass rod armed with a low profile Okuma reel. I like it.
Last night I fished Muskies for three hours. Saw two, no takers. I fished a 7'6" Tooth Tamer tossing big spinnerbaits, a 6'10" Fenwick tossing a Suick Weagle (both fish looked at that lure) and and my trusty Okuma EVX tossing a Top Raider. All were armed with Okuma Akenas, and balanced nicely. I really like the reels, and matched the rods for what I need it to do to work the lure the way I want to work it.
Some folks will like split grip heavy rods, some won't. Doesn't make either 'right' or 'wrong'. |

I have to politely disagree. As a rod builder, I handle alot of blanks of various quality, depending on what the customer or myself wants. And even between the St. Croix lines, you can see a marked difference in weight, construction and even straightness amongst the differnt lines. Not saying you've got to use LT's and $350 rods to be sucessful, but I will say that you get what you pay for. |

If the rod blank itself is resting on your ribs, then the rod is not fitted properly to you. I wouldn't want a hard blank riding on my ribs all day either! I built my LGM192XH with a split but I built it so that the fighting butt tucks nicely against my ribs. No pain!
Bottom line, if you prefer a full grip- go with it.

Right here too,and i dont like split grips for the rib factor either.Its not that its rideing my ribs all day but it bites my ribs good on the hookset.
I have two legend sling blades one with split and one without and like the full grip much more. |

| Will split grip float? Rod and reel combo I run (full cork) will float. Late season occasional slip.........aww crap! First time it happened I was relieved to see the combo float! StCroix/ABU |
