Probably not, unless the biologist posts that data somewhere. But there's nothing stopping you from just asking them for the numbers/size range of the fish they captured. The biologist should have no problem sharing that data, especially if the public (anglers) supports the fishery either financially or with manpower (or both).

You might not get to speak to the biologist right away, if he/she is out in the field. However that data should be available to you.

I have not heard of them out yet on Pewaukee. I know their is a lot of carp killers out with lights on. Lots of people mistake them for the DNR.

I know of three boats that come out regularly that look like DNR flat bottom boats. Generators and lots of lights makes bow shooting carp ectremely fun. I have been out with spot lights scouting the spawning areas taking inventory on all the big girls that are still going through the spawning motions.

The muskies are in full spawn and have been for a week or so. Look for the spawn to continue through the opener on the west side of the lake. Water temps are in the high 50's still and maybe even the low 60's on the east end by the 1st of May. The west end usually is a week behind the east end due to the depth difference.

Contact the Fisheries Biologist for that region. They will give you copies of all the data sheets showing numbers and sizes of what they shocked, netted, etc. You will need to ask them what years the lakes you are interested in were sampled and what type of sampling was done, and then you may request data from any of those operations, as well as any reports that have been written.

There are 2 main data sets available. Index Sampling is the least intensive and is mainly used to monitor reproductive success and young of the year survival using spring and fall shocking. Comprehensive Sampling, as the name suggests uses spring and fall shocking in combination with fyke netting to get a clearer picture of the adult component of the fishery.

Comprehensive Sampling frequently results in written reports including Fisheries management Plans that are sent to the Biologists superiors for approval of their management recommendations for that water body. An example of a Fisheries Management Plan is below:

http://dnr.wi.gov/org/gmu/upchip/documents/butternut.pdf

An example of a yearly fisheries survey summary is below:

http://dnr.wi.gov/fish/reports/final/danelakewaubesa2000and2005.pdf

Many of the fisheries reports and data can also be found by yourself without contacting the Biologist on the DNR website at the following link:

Tell the Wisc. DNR that they have to refine their manners. Shocking the fish doesn't help them. They have to be approached in a proper way. Good etiquette makes for good relations.

Wouldn't they be stocking in the fall after raising this years muskie hatch during the summer? If it is the DNR out there maybe they are taken fyte net studies.

so down in southern part of state they are spawning and you'll be able to start fishing them/ Up in the north they won't let us fish them for another 4 weks. What sense does that make. Why should it be different for the two parts of the state. The females rarely bite when spawning anyway. Its usually the males you catch. I think they should open it in the northwoods early like it use to be.

I usually do my own shocking. Heck, just last night I shocked a really decent female. All I had to do was take my boots off by the door, and clean my dishes.

I suspect that one of the reasons is that the S WI fish typically are in lake ecosystems that prevent successful spawning anyway. If they're not done and the eggs were't really going to mature anyway, I don't see much harm being done in the few occasions where the fish may still be spawning during the opener. But if they are still spawning and the population(s) depend on natural reproduction, like many of the northern lakes? Why take the chance on opening the season a few weeks earlier, when you are pretty much guaranteed that the spawn won't be complete yet?

From what I've seen, you are right -- you ususally catch the skinny males. But why interfere in the first place? Because a few muskie anglers can't wait to fish and don't want to have to travel South of 10 to do it?

We have enough problems in N WI with our fisheries. Why advocate creating more?

Here is something else to think about. The males hang around the spawning area in case there are late spawning females. These males are potential predators for egg and fry eating smaller fish. Removing them from the spawning grounds potentially decreases the number of fry that make it through the early stages of life. They'll mostly get eaten yes, but I would expect the number of young going from stage 1 to stage 2 is greater where the males are hanging around and undisturbed for a couple extra weeks.

How about this . . .

There are legions of underpaid, highly educated and passionate biologists who have determined that it is best for the fishery to delineate the season. Their recommendations have been taken into account in establishing enforceable laws that prohibit the pursuit of these fish, for the betterment of the fishery.

What's the rush? Fish for something else. . . or fish somewhere else, and enjoy the 6 or 7 months during which you can pursue them.

Talked with police this morning on Pewaukee before launching my boat. They are bow fisherman arrowing carp. The people around the lake are mad because of the bright lights shining in their windows.

Weird, wonder how their lights angled down into the water makes it into their windows. . . reflections maybe? Anyways, good for them - take the carp.. . .
