Posts: 254 Location: In the cabbage | Hey guys my best friend and fishing partners father just gave us his old 80's 16ft lund, all the wood is shot and the carpet as well. Where tearing all the wood and carpet out , cutting new wood and laying new carpet, any suggestions? Do I have to use marine grade plywood or can I use regular plywood with a marine epoxy that I will coat over it? ANy suggestions on where to get the stuff as well? Thanks in advance chris

Location: Illinois | On this site, you can use the search function, or post your own thread. I took it upon myself to use the search function, I typed in "rebuild" with the parameters "Boat and Motors", subject, and "search ALL posts" and bam! 11 threads at your disposal and for your reference. http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/board/search/query.asp?fid=0&action... Good luck, maybe some others will chime in with tips and what not. Let us know when you're done! Mike

I would go with the marine grade in the same thickness and good quality carpet. You can get the marine grade at Menards or Home Depot usually. If not, check a small box lumber yard if available. Don't forget your stainless steel screws for reattaching. Oh yeah... measure twice and then again before you start cutting. Easier if you can use the old pieces as a template.

Posts: 64 Location: Stockbridge, WI | I did the same thing to my 1986 sylvan sea monster. After replacing the plywood instead of covering it with carpet like the boat originally had I filled all the screw heads and voids in with caulk and smoothed everything thing out. Then I had the everything covered with a spray on epoxy, the same material you would use for a bed liner in a pick up truck. You can get it in any color you want. It looks great, seals everything up and is very easy to clean.

Posts: 158 | Wow....very cool that you brought this up. I just finished a mod on a mid 80s 16' Lund....check it out...here are some ideas for you! I got home from a 2 day fishing trip and decided the boat was just not functionable so I gutted it. I had the idea for this in my head since the day I bought it. This boat was modified with musky fishing as the main priority! I can stow a 9' rod on the right side locker with the tips going under the front deck...not too many 16' boats have storage for a 9' rod! Half of the rear casting deck is removable. I didn't want to frame around the control panel and wanted to be able to have more storage underneath it that wasn't restricted by being framed in so I did it half and half. The rear half of the back deck is the starter battery storage, tools, extra prop, etc. The rear seat pops right off and stows under the open half of the deck so the rear deck is completely unobstructed. The bow mount trolling motor batteries will go under the big hatch on the front deck and there is still a ton of storage under there. Both side lockers offer lots of storage as well....basically I wanted the boat to have the ability to be completely clutter free so nothing is in the way while muskie fishing. I still have to get the bow mount troller hooked up but other than that this boat is ready to rock and has already had a 41" fish in it! On materials I probably spent right at $500...maybe a bit more. 5/8 green treated plywood for all the flat surfaces, and 1/2" for the verticle surfaces just to save a little on weight. The 2x2 framing weighs nothing and is totally ROCK solid. The carpet was from Mills Fleet Farm. I used the old wood floor for a template for the new floor and cardboard for the front deck and tops of the side lockers...just cut it to fit, lay it on your sheet of plywood and trace around it, and cut it out with a jig saw. If you have any questions at all don't hesitate to ask...I literally just got done with it so all of it is fresh in my head. Have fun man! I loved doing this project! Posts: 64 Location: Stockbridge, WI | I took it to a local guy who does body work on cars. Total bill for his labor and all the material was $300.00. I'm fishing at Lake Vermillion right now but when I get home I can email you some photos if you would like.
