| I know this sounds improbable- But Outpost Fly-In owner on "trout water lake" (my-> lake X) told me this story- I think I saw same fish in 97.
Late May- Two hardcore trophy small mouth fisherman are fishing a rocky shoreline w/ wood. They,ve fished this lake +8 yrs. One guy's tossing a crank bait. Thows it up next to a log. The log moves and inhales the bait. ~ 45 minutes later they have very large Muskie next to the boat (guy was using 30# spiderwire). Don't have a tape measure (lake is CPR only for Muskie)- measure fish w/ fishing pole & fish slowly swims away- Later measure distance on fishing pole --> 63"! Fly-in owner says guys are honest hard working smallie fisherman, and have fished with him for +8 years & can't see any reason they would stretch the truth. Neither one had a clue about how big or what a WR Muskie would potentially measure.

| The way I see it Maniac is the fish must have recently died of old age or you wouldn''t be telling anyone!!!! That''s like telling Ma Barker you have the HOPE DIAMOND!(which by the way is HUGE, check it out if you ever go to the Smithsonian Institute)[;)] I''ll take some vacation this fall + we''ll explore this story further! Besides, you have some baits I believe will harness this leviathan that used to adorn the downstairs family room! My biggest thrill thus far was 3 weeks ago when at day break I found a flathead catfish draped over a forked stick w/ a cigarette stuck in its'' mouth; some sort of sacrifice I guess. Now go catch that fish! [:sun:] |

| Sponge Bob- Last trip to visit her house cost me ~ $1,600. She's an expensive vice. I'm plotting how I can possibly squeze a fall expedition to Lake X. The misus is getting suspicious- thinks I might have Canadian girlfriend.[8)] Hee, hee, she's right, it's a big fat ole Muskie![:p]
long term- thought about buying the outpost cabin! How's that for hooked??

| ESOX-
Let's see. You've been going up there for how long??? OK just for round figures say 10 years. 10 yrs * 1600 per year = $16,000
That's a down payment plus on a cabin I'd think.
I'd tell the wife that you want to save money by buying this cabin. Make sure you explain the benefits of owning over renting.
1) you can use it any time - no more waiting for your weeks vacation.[]
2) interest is tax deductible[]
3) property value increases - especially after you catch that world record[:praise:]
4) you'd have to spend countless hours up there trying to catch that record in order to increase your property values.[]
5) good retirement savings idea - the cabin that is[]
6) if she ever gets mad at you she can send you to your cabin []
If you need any more help let me know. I'll be glad to pitch in. Also, when you do buy it I pick vacations for the entire following year in December. Let me know when you'll be up there so I can plan vacations accordingly.
Good Luck and Be Safe,

| Hey Anonymous- pretty common name on these boards- surprise's me how many relatives you have.
They did'nt put fish into the boat- measured fish in water beside the boat. Maybe they were off an inch or two- maybe not. Perhaps it was bigger! Still a heck of a big Muskie.
Here's a test for all the Hillbilly's out there. Sponge Bob seeing you have such affection for Cajun cooking I hope you're not offended.[]
I'm 5' 8" tall- that puts my eyes at ~ 5' 5" relative to the soles of my feet. I'm standing on the rear seat of a Lund Guide Series. It's 50" wide outside to outside at the top where I'm standing. The seat is ~ 4" down from the top & ~ 16" above the floor of the boat. A Muskie swims under the boat ~ 2' under my feet- I can see both head appear & tail disappear simaltaneously while fish glides under boat-[8)] What is minimum length of fish???[:0]

| Not offended at all! I can''t get offended at something I don''t understand![;)] besides we are pretty much the same size. My nickname at work is Hercules so I let everything blow past me.... bet I haven''t been really mad 5 times in my whole 47 almost 48 yrs + stay in shape by slinging sacks of mail + conducting the daily supervisor toss! Mental mathematical riddles cause me to spasm so I''ll pass on this 1......save some for the Fall Games![:sun:] |

|
| Hey Al, are you a math teacher? I'm a little rusty on my geometry, but here is what I came up with:
First, I needed to calculate the angle from your eye to the beam of your boat. Using your height and the seat height I figured Tan@=25"/61" which equates to 24.8 degrees. Now, considering the other heights and distance below the boat of the fish I figured Tan(24.8) = X/105". From this X= 43 inches..... but that is only HALF the length of the fish. That means you just saw an 86 inch musky!!!! My assumption was that you were standing at the centerline of your boat and didn't account for the refractive index of water. How's that for anal?
Now, if you want to make the fish more realistic... you'd have to account for its speed of travel because the chance of you seeing the head and tail dissappear simultaneously are pretty slim.... unless it truly was 86 inches in length.
Now, correct my mistakes and let me know how close to the right answer I came. Thanks.

| Jlong is correct 86.582 to be exact. Being a modern engineer, I rely on my CAD system for tough problems like this.[;)] I can e-mail anybody interested a detailed drawing. Did not factor in the refractive index of water either, if someone can give me this formula I’d be glad to include it in the print.[:)] |

| nxtwldrcd,
I did it the old fashioned way. Scratched out the diagram on a napkin and blew the dust off my calculator (I'm more of a chemist these days than an engineer). Glad to see my brain still retained some info from college.
Maybe back in the 50's when the boats were much smaller (narrower) those kind of stories were REAL and not exaggerated. Tough to pull that off now... considering a new 1850 Fishawk has a 95" beam!!!!!
jlong
P.S. Glad to know I'm wasn't the only one anal enough to actually do the calculation. |

| Thanks for answering first guys as I was going to wait a day or so to give someone else a chance! I had the thing figured out before I read half of it last night + went on to bed..... Jason I will include a similar question on a contest later this fall as NWR + I are teaming up for a biggie soon and we expect you to be the first to answer [;)]! |
|

|
| Hey guys- I also diagramed it in my AutoCAD program (I'm also a Eng. Electronics/Electrical) The base right triangle to start with is- R (adjacent)= 25" (1/2 width of boat) X (opposite)= 61" (Soles of my feet are 4' below top center of boat so X has to be =65-4=61"). This establishes base right triangle, i.e., posistion of my eyes w/respect to top center and edge of the boat. Z (hypotenuse) = ~65.92 Now tan angle A = 61/25 = 2.44 & angle "A" then must be ~67.7 deg. & angle "B" = ~23.3 deg. and of course angle "C"= 90 deg.
Now extending for actual top of fish relative to posistion of my eyes. X = 61+4+24 = 89" w/ acute angles remaining the same Z= X/sin A = 89/sin 67.7 = ~96.2" R= Z cos A Therefore:
R= 96.2 * .3794561 =~36.5" Fish = 36.5 x 2= 73"
Like JLong says, of course I can't watch tail & head simaltaneously- so when tail disapears I look to other side head is already coming out= fish is moving very slow. Plus refraction of water. So given all the variables the fish is definitely +60".[:p]
How's that for anal???????? [:knockout:]
BTW: Just wanted to show that even w/o a tape measure, you can sometimes come up w/ a reasonable estimate. []
PS- actually saw this fish, as described.[:p]

| Esox, re-check your formula for tangent: It’s opposite/adjacent The correct formula is 25/61 = .409836Tan-1 = 22.286 degrees.
You have mail.
Peace.

| Maniac, can't hop the freight ever since Boxcar Willie went to Hobo heaven.... too painful! [:sun:] This post reminds me of things I've seen in the past.... can't anyone just accept the fact that strange stuff happens? Seems like you have to have pics, drawings, measurements, eye witnesses, ear witnesses, nose witnesses, witness protection programs, why don't we just sing "Can I Get A Witness?" whenever such a thing might occur! But if you were to see such a leviathan, catch the aforementioned leviathan + put him on a stringer, then you would have proof but would then subject yourself to untold horror from the multitudes! Do like I do.... if I see something out of the ordinary, I tell myself no no no....I didn't see that, I just thought I did. That way nobody knows but me what I didn't see! Now click those heels together 3 times........[:sun:] |

| NXTWRLDRCD- Just got back from business trip, so I have time for clarifications. Got your mail- you fell for the trap, fish was 2' under my feet. Not 2 feet (24") + 16". You have mail. Altitude of the right triangle should be 89" for solution. You're absolutely right if solving angle B, i.e., for basic right triangle, labeled A, B, C clockwise -> Angle A TAN = opposite/adjacent = 61/25. Of course I violated my own rule- "Never round the numbers until the solution is at hand." I also hit the "3" where I should have hit "2", i.e., "23.3" should actually be 22.28558= ~22.3 degrees. (to many "Leinies")
Now Z (hypotenuse)= X/sin A = 89/sin 67.771441 = ~96.18448"
R(base)= Z cos A Therefore: R= 96.18448 * .3792234 = 36.47541"
Fish = 36.47541 x 2 = 72.950582" = ~ 73" for all the non-anal out there the symbol ~ means approximately
Sponge- Was in Rhode Island last week- Thursday morning went fishing out by Block Island- Strippers & Blues (4 hour Sport Charter- w/ 3 of my WW managers). Got hit in head by flying 38" Stripper, have seevere amnesia- got home OK, almost forgot about this board- but wife reminded me- she was curious why I wasn't "fishin' on the Internet". Looked at my boat & realized I must be this Esox Maniac character. Certainly will be communicating future manifestations with great restraint.
[]
Wish you could have been there- they were wacking a chartruese green double-skirted jig (~4oz squid jigs)w/ chartruese plastic teaser tails (double-tenacle(7")"by Mario") trolled on 300" of 65# wire line, about 20-30' down. We were fishing a reef ~ 30' water on top. Actually using Berkley Muskie rods & twitching the jig as it was being trolled--> Great action - 6-> +30 stripers & 7 blues in about an hour. Numerous fish lost before they got to boat- Two of the guy's were novices's, i.e., never been on the water before- they had hard time keeping tension on the strippers at the boat & would come unhooked. Largest stripper 38" & blue- 34" - Early morning bite. My arms were cramping (wish charter captain had better reels), but I was smilin' [:sun:]
Just had grilled stripper last nite- yum-yum[:p] Got a favorite receipe? What about blues?- understand they're good smoked - but would seem hard to light![]

| Not fair! Went + looked at boats today but w/ the wife/little Sponge not much was done! If the stripers are whole, say 4-6lbs., bake w/ skin on, stuff belly w/ onions at 350* for about an hr. Let cool 5 minutes then peel off skin + starting at front/top of fish use a fork to peel meat from bones + place on a large platter. Drizzle lemon juice, garlic butter + cajun spices on fish + serve w/ corn bread, fried okra + salad. Be forewarned that your guests will be like stray cats as once you feed them this they will hang around 'til you pop their hindquarters w/ a pellet gun!
Bluefish(how big?) place fillets in a deep dish + coat w/ Italian dressing, sea salt, Old Bay Seasoning + marinate in fridge for 2 hrs, then grill or bake. If they are small I just bake them + fix them like stripers. I'm outa here....time to stoke the grill![:sun:] |
