Spent a day on the water yesterday, trailer felt like it pulled fine home. Got her in the garage, day done. Later on I go out to check the bearing buddies. Check one side, everything is good. Go to the other side and see a mess! I never felt a thing on the ride home. Here are some pics. Can anyone tell me what happened, and what I need to do to get it fixed? Thanks in advance for the help.

Sorry about the pic. Hit zoom out a couple times and it should be good.

Looks to me you blew a bearing from that pic.

Thanks Merckid. How does something like that happen? How do I get it fixed? Is it a DIY job or do I need to bring it in? Is it safe to drive to a shop? Does anyone know of a reputable place to take it in SW MPLS, Richfield, or Bloomington? Thanks!

jack it up and spin it and wiggle it back and forth if it is not extremely sloppy tkae it to any local garage it is not that big of aproblem to fix. should be less than 75$ it is not that hard to fix just need to buy new bearings and races if you have a nieghbor that is handy it only takes about 30-45 minutes to do.

I've seen this before. Don't ask, but it was many years ago, on my brothers trailer. Bearing buddies are NOT a substitute for yearly, or twice yearly, maintenance on trailer brearings. Bearing Buddies are a weak attempt at trying to keep water from entering past the seals, when you back your trailer with warm hubs into the cold water. This creates a vaccuum effect, and water gets sucked in past the seals.

Bearing Buddies are supposed to put a positive pressure inside the hub to offset this. They do not pack new grease into the bearings when you "fill" them. You only should put enough grease in to compress the spring. That is what keeps pressure inside. To much grease, and you'll either pop the seal, or the Bearing Buddy will come off.

Now, if those bearing were not serviced regularly, it's likely they had water inside the hub, and then rust formed. Also, as you drive a hub with water in it, the water heats up, and melts the grease in the bearings, and they begin to run dry, and well, you see the result. Hopefully, the races are not welded to the axle shaft. If they are, you're looking at a new axle. And a bit more than $75.

I check my bearings in July, and then disassemble and repack in the fall when I winterize the rig. It's a bit of work, but I never have problems anymore.

I agree with Shep...i changed my bearings in the middle of last year and at the beginning of this year there was some rust...good thing I checked. Its not a big job to check the bearings and grease them every year. And if any bearings or races are questionable...they're not expensive to replace.

Thanks for the input guys. I just bought this bought used, only the fourth trip out too. Well, if I didn't learn things the hard way I probably wouldn't know anything at all. Just need to learn how to fix it by June 1st now. If that boat is sitting in the garage on opener I will be one angry dude!

I've had grease come out of my bearing buddies and splatter all over wheel in the past. I always assumed I over filled them and as a rule I thought as long as the hub isn't hot while running...You're OK. I've been running that way since June 97', I think I'll go through them tomorrow.

TJ-
Doesn't that look like what happens when you back a boat into another trailer at the Pelican launch? hehehehe. Or is this what happens when a net flies out of the boat on the way to the lake?

Jeeze, I take way to much for granted. I'm going to take a look at mine this weekend.

Thanks for the replies. Me and a buddy popped it off last night. I'm getting a new hub and bearings for sure. Replacing the bearings on the other side as well. It does appear that the back race has welded itself to the axle. My buddy seems to think he can get it off with some heat, cutting a small groove, and using a chisel to break it off. Anybody have any thoughts on this? It looks like some grooves were worn into the axle just behind the threaded portion as well. I'm a little leery going this route. However, I don't know much about stuff like this and he used to work in a garage. Do I give him the benefit of the doubt?

If the spindle is grooved, I'd seriously consider getting a new axle or at a minimum, get a shop to cut off the old spindle and re-weld a new one on. That groove will likely be a source of continuing problems. I replaced my whole axle, bearings and hubs for under $140 this spring. Not sure what size your axle is, but new ones don't break the bank like I was afraid it would!
Good luck w/ it.

That is true, Sorno. A complete new axle assy, including hubs, isn't that bad. These can be gotten at places like Northern Tool, and perhaps Fleet Farm and Tractor SUpply. Most large cities have frame and axle shops, that can get the new axle.

It's easy enough to install, too.

Thanks guys. The more I look at, the more I am thinking new axle too. Anyone know what axle I need? It is a 1992 Esox Mag with a 1992 K-Dee Tuff Trail Trailer.

Call Ken or Dee and see if they can help you with the trailer axle source.

Fixed! See you all on the water tomorrow! A lot of work and I'll still blank I'm sure. Thanks for everyone's help.
