Posts: 7115 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Tough fishing weather brought on tough fish catching conditions, but 12 teams out of 130 managed to boat legal (30" or larger)fish on day one of the first event of the PMTT Trail held at Cave Run Lake in Morehead, KY. Dealing with rain, wind, and a 17 degree temperature drop over a days' time, anglers from Ohio, Illinois, Minnesota, West Virginia, Wisconsin and of course Kentucky, were all able to convert fish into the net. The early morning rains and gusting winds all gave way to partly sunny, with tomorrow's forecast holding solid at 60 degrees and mostly sunny. Fish were caught throughout the day, starting shortly after the 7AM launch up until around 2:30 in the afternoon. For a number of anglers who had established specific patterns during pre-fishing in the days and weeks before the event, their patterns held true, and showed results, and they found themselves on the leaderboard. For others, the diminishing water clarity brought on by overnight and morning rains either frustrated their well-laid plans, or had them running for new areas and new patterns in hopes of hooking into a fish. Local anglers such as James Wells and Russel Schnieder, as well as muskie fisherman from as far away as Minnesota in the case of reigning PMTT Top Gun Champions Kirk Allen and Brad Swenson found their way to the leader board. Though only 12 boats put fish in the net, others just missed measuring with sub-legals, and even more saw fish that had they eaten, would have possibly changed the order of the final leaderboard. Fish were caught both trolling and casting, in both classic spring spots as well as off the first breaklines, with an assortment of lures types. Below is a breakdown of the day one results from the PMTT Cave Run Qualfier: 1st Place: Team #77 (Brad Swenson/Kirk Allen) - 43.25" - 77pts. 2nd Place: Team #95 (Tom Olson/Seamus Hanley) - 33" and 31.5" - 66pts. 3rd Place: Team #91 (Russell Schneider/James Wells) - 39.5" - 62pts. 4th Place: Team #90 (Jason Jackson/Roger Bulard) - 37" - 52pts. 5th Place: Team #3 (Jim Carlson Sr./Jim Carson Jr.) - 36" - 48pts. 6th Place: Team #35 (Christine Option/Dan Gelman) - 35.5" - 46pts. 7th Place: Team #28 (Joe Brezinski/Bob Provax) - 35.5" - 46pts. 8th Place: Team #40 (Troy Bilbery/Brian Clepper) - 34.5" - 41pts. 9th Place: Team #65 (Tom Dietz/David Four) - 34" - 40pts. 10th Place: Team #74 (Bill Burroughs/Kevin Hopfensperger) - 33.5" - 38pts. 11th Place: Team #116 (Karen DiPietro/Keith Eshbaugh) - 31.5" - 30pts. 12th Place: Team #46 (Tony Grant/Laura Morrison) - 31" - 28pts. Going into Day 2, its apparent that the post frontal conditions will bring tough fishing to all entrants, but all it will take to vault into first is a 44" fish, or a second fish from any team that has already put one on the board in Day 1. One thing is for sure, taking the lead in this tourney is for any of the over 250 anglers in competition only one cast or one rip during a trolling pass away. A combination of skill, hard work and maybe a little luck will crown the winner tomorrow, so stay tuned to MuskieFIRST for more coverage!
