I think that most of us that have them know that they are "special" and will hold on to them. I manged to get a half dozen of them in the last couple of years from various people who didn't like the fact that the finish was yellowing. I stipped and repainted them and yes, he really did use anywhere from 11 to 13 small weights back then.

Posts: 419 Location: Appleton, WI | Just out of curiousity what would a Hughes River of that year be worth??? I've got 3 that are 2000 models. a 10" sharp nose Hughey, 8" Crappie Shaker and a 8" Kiss Sucker Humpback. I've got others that appear to be older models, but I can't be sure. Did the older models have just HR on the back signed and no dates at all??? catch ya later, Krappie

Posts: 7090 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Just a little personal plug here....I am donating 2 of my "personal stash" HRs to the auction. Both are beat up, but both are coming with custom painting from Beav. One is a 2000 8" Shaker and the other a '99 6" Hughey. December 1st.....

The first Hughes Rivers had nothing on the back at all. No date, No initials....... I bought some from Jim Wilson for $16.95 each. It seems like a million years ago. Funny how things change. Pikiespawn ![]()

Posts: 419 Location: Appleton, WI | Thanks Pikiespawn. I was thinking about selling them them this winter sometime. I need to unload a bunch of baits just because I'm running out of room in the tackle box and living quarters. Man, that's a good return on an investment if you bought at HR for $16.95 a piece!!!! catch ya later, Krappie Edited by Krappie 11/18/2005 6:47 AM

Correct me if I am wrong but, I believe it has something to do with the way the maker was weighting them at the time. Somewhere in the archives is an xray of one of those HR's that shows all of the weighting.

Posts: 4266 | After stipping and repainting many HR's in the last couple of years, I can tell you it is the weighting. I had some '99 and '00 lures with 11-13 small weights in them. As time went on, there were less weights, but larger and in different positions. Most guys will tell you that the older ones had a shimmy to them that the newer ones lost when the weighting changed. I've caught fish on HR's from '99 thru '02. I've got ten lures that are '00 and earlier, and I can add that the Shakers are a little thinner and lighter and do work easier. I don't notice as much of a difference with the Hugheys. Beav

Posts: 1504 Location: Oregon | Interesting...well by keeping the weight low the baits will "shimmy/shake". RM
