I was into another discussion site, that had some comments on Reef Hogs and hook-up.
So I'm wondering how many of you have cut of the hooks and replaced them with split rings?
I've not had problems losing fish but apparently others have. Any thoughts ?

I haven't, but because I don't currently carry any replacement cotter pins, I would do it as a temporary measure to keep the bait in the rotation if I had to cut hooks. If I find one that gets bit, I don't want to mess w/ the balance of it.

I found out recnently doing that is one of the things you can do to screw up a reef hawgs action. The people I learned it from know their reef hawgs.

I have tried it, and immediately changed back to the way it was. Once the split rings were on there, it had absolutely no side to side movement, and barely any up and down.... only pull, pause, pull, pause.... etc.

I had a record of never losing a fish on a Reef Hawg for two seasons and then the third, I lost EVERY single one. You go thru phases in this sport like anyother. NO splitrings. Good luck

I prefer to use split rings on all my baits .
In my opinion it ups your odds of landing muskies , especially if SHE'S BIG or starts to do the death roll !!
As far as changing the action I've had no problems.
The manufacturers themselves ( Reef Hog , Suick etc. ) all put split rings on thier baits now right off the line.
But as always to each thier own.

Good luck in the upcoming season !!!

I bought another reefer today. Small size, took the three hooks off, replaced with split rings, but skipped putting the middle hook back on the bait, so only trebles forward and aft. I've done it before... with good results. I also went from 3/0 hooks to 4/0 hooks.

Once you put split ringed hooks on a reef, the hooks create to much swing and kill the action of the bait,6" are worse then 8"`ers! That bait is designed from the begining of time with no split rings for a reason! Just my opinion, and I catch alot of fish on reefhawgs!

I agree with Handy. I have been able to get away with split ringing a front hook or two on a couple 6"ers, but other than that, I killed the action on many. I even quit fishing certain lures due to them not being what they once were. I then replaced the cotter and hook on several that I had once split ringed, and improved them again. I noticed that split ringing the back hook on the 8" is especially dtrimental to action. Just unscrew the eye a few turns, open up the screw eye, replace the hook with another 774 5/o add a dab of super glue, epoxy or gorrilla glue, and screw it back it.

I split ring lots of lures, but not Reef Hawgs. They work better as is and the hook fine as is!

I had a great pet Reefhawg that caught many fish. Once I cut the hooks off and replaced them with splitrings, the action went to hell. Now I pinch down the barbs on all of my Reefhawgs. I'd rather run the risk of losing a fish or two and not have to cut the hooks.
Last year I bought some blanks from Rollie and Helens, and after I put them together and weighted them and painted them, I put a coat of Envirotex on them to see if they wouldn't crack. They didn't, and because I weighted them I can still get them down a bit, but they're not too heavy so they don't sink real fast. I can run them right under the surface if I work them fast enough. I know some guys crack them on purpose so they take on water, but so far my experimental weighting and sealing has worked.

I have a bunch of these lures. I fish them right out of the box, and they work fine for me. hookup is good, and so is durability. One thing, I give the fish a slow 2 count on a Hawg, then HAMMER 'em. Works for me. Those of you who find it amusing to abuse the brand, send 'em all to me, I'll just use them to catch fish!
