Posts: 921 | My dad is looking to sell his 1995 Alumcraft with a 30 horse Yamaha 2 stroke. Problem is boat hasn't ran in a few years so the carbs are gummed up and shot. Friend of his says it will be about $1000 to rebuild the carbs since they are beyond cleaning. I really don't know what the boat and motor is worth. Call it $4000 if it ran. He really doesn't want to put the $1000 into it not knowing how much he will get out. If a guy listed it and said "motor doesn't run. needs carbs rebuilt" full disclosure. I assume there's got to be someone out there looking for a deal on something they can fix themselves? Not sure how to advise him as he's looking to me wondering if he should fix or sell "as is" cheaper. Thoughts? | ||

Posts: 20219 Location: oswego, il | You would have to discount the issue There are tons of project boats out there for sale to some that are sitting on a trailer and that's what they are really selling. Disclosure is key and the price will need to reflect that if you want to sell it. Take a look at marketplace.and Craigslist and look at cheap boats, you will see. A buddy of mine is looking for a bigger boat and only has a 600 dollar budget. Nothing out there with a beam over 80" that doesn't need work. Edited by ToddM 8/18/2020 1:04 PM | ||

Posts: 787 Location: Delavan, WI | $1000 seems a bit steep for a pair of carburetors to me, i had both replaced on a 99 mercury 75 hp years ago and i want to say it was maybe $500-600 parts and labor He would get more $ for a running motor- no one would just take a chance and pay close to full price for a non running motor- For example non running daily driver type car thats more than 10 yrs old probably worth $500-$1000-if lucky same exact car running could be worth $2500-$3500 or more depending on year make model etc. Edited by muskymartin67 8/18/2020 1:10 PM | ||

Posts: 921 | It's 3 cylinders. So 3 carbs. So maybe $1000 isn't too far off base in today's dollars. It's a friend of a friend that I would hope is trustworthy. | ||

Posts: 760 | If the rest of the boat is clean and in good shape, I would get a couple of quotes on the repair work and have it fixed. You can always find a buyer out there. The most important thing is to keep all your receipts and document all your recent work for your next owner. Kdawg | ||

Posts: 921 | Correct, the boat and motor are in great shape. I started my musky fishing days with that boat in the late 90's. I bought my own boat in 2001 and I bet my dad's boat hasn't seen the water more than 10 times since 2001. Once that motor is running it's going to be a great boat for someone! | ||

A couple years ago I bought a 20 year old snowmobile that had sat for 5 years, 2 cycle, 2 cylinders. The local shop cleaned both carbs and it runs great no, did it for just over $200. | |||

You can say its the carbs and it would be x to fix, but unless its running, the buyer really doesn't know if that is the only problem. At least that is how I would look at it if I was purchasing. | ||

Posts: 100 | Someone who knows what they were doing could have those carbs cleaned in a matter of an hour or two. They would also run non-ethanol gas with a heavy mix of seafoam through that motor. Change the plugs out, dump out the old gas. Fill the tank with new non-ethanol gas with a few bottles of seafoam mixed in and you might be surprised. | ||

Posts: 100 | Also that 30hp is 2 cylinder, so therefore 2 carbs. Not 3 as suggested earlier. | ||

Location: 31 | You for sure get more for it if it's running/operating properly... simply less uncertainty. I would try some fresh gas/ect. as has already been suggested. It would add value for a buyer if you could at least get it to turn over and spark a little, and that costs almost nothing.

Posts: 21 | If the boat is in great condition then it's probably best to get it serviced and running well. People will pay a good price for something that is nice, and kept in great condition. If he just wants a quick sale, then could sell it cheap as a project, but people will always try to lowball on a project like that!! | ||
