Posts: 18 | Looking for a different motor for Alumacraft Phantom V170. Currently has a 92 Johnson 120 hp. Just wanting to go to something newer (still used) and more fuel efficient. Was considering a 115 etec. What's everyone's thoughts.

Location: Eastern Ontario | I'm a big Suzuki fan but the etec would likely let you use your existing controls (as may the Suzuki ). Not sure how easy to find a newer used motor not on a boat.

Posts: 3480 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Hiya!! Horsehunter beat me to it!! Yes...you should most likely be able to use your existing controls for the etec, and being the phantom is more of a bass-style rig, putting one of the larger 4 strokes may not allow the boat to sit level in the water at rest. I'd look heavy at the Etec 115 HO which is rated at 115, but I believe it will have higher output, possibly getting you a little more "umph" than the etec 115. Both will be solid motors regardless, and the big thing I think you will notice is a significant reduction with oil and fuel use, along with a motor that is very quiet while idling, but yet has a great growl while underway but not overpowering. With the right prop set-up (A raker propeller around 20 pitch I'm guessing) will get your boat up on plane and will get your boat handling really really well... Although the 4 strokes are great motors, I have found in my personal experience their power curve is quite even throughout the rpm range, so they are not as powerful coming out of the hole as the direct injected 2 stroke My personal preference is to be up and out quickly and the 4 strokes I felt were too slow coming out. Top end was about the same though... Here's the link to the spec sheet for the etec. https://www.evinrude.com/en-US/e-tec/e-tec-full-specs.html#tab=2 Steve Edited by VMS 9/2/2019 7:38 AM

Posts: 1767 Location: Lake Country, Wisconsin | I agree the 4’s are noticeably slower out of the hole.....but not lugging around and buying jugs of oil throughout the season is a trade I will take all day. I would personally never go back to a 2 stroke

Location: Contrarian Island | if you want to do any trolling a 4 stroke is the way to go for sure.. 4 strokes with a good 4 blade stainless come out of the hole just fine.. it's all in the propping... quiet, less smoke, and no oil.. easy decision imo

In this case, both 2 stroke and 4 stroke motors are very close as you have pointed out, so there is a good chance it would be very little change in how the boat sits... You missed the Honda as well... it comes in a 478 pounds, and over 2.3 L for displacement. It'd be the strongest 4 stroke of the ones listed, but also the heaviest. The Johnson 120 weighs in around 370 pounds. At this point, going 2 or 4 stoke is pretty darn close...they are all good motors... a 4 blade most likely should not be needed on this rig. Steve

Posts: 427 | BNelson - 9/3/2019 9:36 AM Yup the prop makes the difference. I switched to a 4 blade stainless on my 4 stroke 90 hp and the boat jumps out of the hole and handles like it's on rails. I lost only 2 mph on top end.wot.if you want to do any trolling a 4 stroke is the way to go for sure.. 4 strokes with a good 4 blade stainless come out of the hole just fine.. it's all in the propping... quiet, less smoke, and no oil.. easy decision imo Edited by 7ovr50 9/3/2019 9:15 PM

Posts: 921 | I went from a Yamaha 4 stroke on my old boat to a 250 Etec on my new boat. Really wish I had a 4 stroke. Got a smoking deal on the boat with the E Tec so I didn’t have a choice. Adding a $50 gallon of XD100 oil on almost every gas fill really sucks. As much as the cost sucks. Remembering to add the oil sucks just as much.

Remembering to add the oil sucks just as much. Hiya!! Quick question for you on that motor...is the oil mixture setting set for the minimum oil use with the XD100? If it is not, that would explain the heavy amount of oil use. I've got the 150 which obviously is smaller, but I use about a gallon of oil on a full week in Canada burning around 100 gallons. Deals come out now and then on oil as well which would get you down to around $40 to $45 a gallon. the 3 gallon pack one time came up on Jet.com which sold at $35 a gallon. I doubt we'd see that kind of pricing today again, but it can happen here and there... Steve

Location: Eastern Ontario | I'm thinking you may be able to use your existing controls with a Suzuki as they made the OMC 4 strokes. My main motor is a 2012 and the clip on the safety lanyard when I purchased a spare was OMC. My 2017 kicker has OMC gas line fittings on the Suzuki tank. I have owned 4 Suzukis and would strongly recommend.

Posts: 921 | Yes, it's been in the shop. When my buddy owned the boat the dealer thought they could switch it on the computer to use XD50 instead of XD100 but they said that model/year must use XD100. I assume they made sure it was only using the minimum amount of oil, but I am not sure on that.

Posts: 18 | Thanks for the info guys. Right or wrong I went with the Etec 115. Now to prop it. I already have a Raker 13.5x20 (part no. 394759) will that work or do I need to get a new one?

Posts: 3480 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Hiya!! That prop will work well!! I’d bet it will be very close to your old 120. If the numbers are off a little, you can get pitch adjusted an inch either direction as well. What hole did they mount the motor in? Steve

Posts: 18 | Not sure on what holes. The boat is sitting at the dealership right now waiting to be rigged up. The old motor may still be on there.
