Posts: 386 | Hello. This is mostly a curiosity question. I've been rocking YouTube over this super nice winternet, and I've seen a few people using spinning gear for muskies. For whatever reason most of it coming from LSC. Just wondering what advantages people are finding using spinning gear over casting? Are there particular presentations it excels? I've noticed they are often used with Shazillas. What rod and reel combos are people using? (Brands and models that stand up well to Muskie fishing) My thought is I may be interested in picking one up someday to try to get my wife a little more interested in fishing for something other than sunnies, and possibly a starting rig for my son when he gains some interest in things other than throwing stuff into the lake.

Posts: 1209 | Thornbros and OR Rollie and Hellen's muskyshop makes a spinning rod for muskies. I think it's a crutch more than a benefit. There are many good spinning reels with high drag pressures. I had picked out a "quantum smoke inshore" reel when I thought about getting one for the gf. It mayyyyy be nice after 5 days of fishing to hold a spinning combo for a hour to relax... I edited the reel. Size 40

Posts: 431 | It's fine for some baits. I have a stradic 3500 cl4 and a cabelas predator musky rod. Main use is for guests who don't want to learn a casting reel. One thing is no matter what rod you used it is going to be awkward throwing heavy baits holding the line in your trigger finger.

Put a spendy reel on it...fun stick for tossing small stuffs.

It mayyyyy be nice after 5 days of fishing to hold a spinning combo for a hour to relax... I use a spinning rod for muskies quite a bit. Creatures. Think speed and leverage. I've caught a bunch over 50 on that rig. Whips 'em fast, too. My current spinning rod for creatures is a custom Okuma 7', I don't like an 8' 'muskie' spinning rod for pitching creatures or other smaller baits; big isn't necessarily better in a muskie spinning rod for the techniques I use that design for. We'll be working with Vexan to build a Creature rod specific to the technique this year. Should be a killer rod for big bass creatures, spinnerbiats, topwater, and swim baits and for creaturing up some muskies, will carry a lifetime warranty, and retail for about $149.00. I can flip a metal kitchen chair 2' in the air from 20' away on the hookset with a properly designed spinning rod.

Posts: 32895 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I use 300 sized reels, from a couple builders. Abu is strapped to my prototype spinning rod, and a Piscifun Destroyer MX on the Okuma. Spooled with monofilament for creatures, superline and I don't get along on spinning reels, because I set the hook too early.

Posts: 1249 Location: Walker, MN | I use 4000 size shimanos and 50# braid for kids, newbs or June fishing. Any lure over 2oz and the braid will eventually shred your index finger up. Fun set-ups for downsizing though.

Posts: 1144 Location: Minnesota. | 40# braid. Yeah, you need to switch-up fingers or sling small stuffs which I do.
