Does anyone have suggestions of rods that are 8 1/2' or bigger that have a shorter butt section than others. My old man needs a new one but he is old school and wants a longer rod with an "old school" short butt end. He fishes for 1 week a year so as cheap as possible would be great. He primarily throws double showgirls and small cranks and jerks. Will be setting the rod up with a 400b.

Thanks!

The musky innovations rod could be an option

I believe the new fenwick 9'er only has a 15" butt section if I'm not mistaken

St Croix is 14 inches I think unless they changed something.

The musky innovation rods have only a 13-14" butt. Nice inexpensive rods, the only thing I don't like is the short butt sections

Newer St Croix's with a solid cork rear grip are 14", but the older Avids are 12". You can also cut however much off of the butt of any rod he likes, and epoxy a pc of rubberized cork, or a nicer butt cap on. Can then get the exact length he wants.

One thing you can do is simply buy a rod, cut off the butt cap and then cut the handle down and re-epoxy the butt cap back on. Just use good Gorilla Glue epoxy and secure the butt cap on tight for 24 hours. I have had some customers do this to TI rods and they have all said it worked great. Turn a 9' rod with an 18" handle into a 8'6" rod with a 12" handle

Yup i cut the handles off. People will think i am crazy but i've done this to Big Dawgs...Long Rangers...all of them.

I cut the handle 6 inches behind the reel seat...then i cut the end cap off about an inch long. Cut a 2 inch wood dowel and whittle it down so it fits snug into each end. You need a little taper on it as the end cap hole will be bigger than the reel seat hole. Epoxy it in place. Good as new and a nice short butt end. I then use Rod Wrap as i like the added grip and nobody is the wiser.

Or get a custom made to spec...i had Professional Edge make me 2 like that then you have a true 8'6 rod with a short butt end.

Here's a pic of a Big Dawg i just got done doing. Sorry a little blurry.

Slingblade sounds like it would be perfect. I consider the butt section short.

Do you palm the reel with the butt that short? Casting anything over a few ounces must suck... If you Palm, how do you have any leverage? Doesn't make a ton of sense to me, but to each their own.

No palming...i've never felt like i have any power doing that...i hold the section in front of the reel and the butt is against my stomach.

how do you cast? with one hand I imagine? I would lose all casting power with a handle like that

Right thumb on spool and left hand on the wrapped upper section. The right hand basically does not move...it's a pivot point right in front of your stomach and draw back over your left shoulder and let it rip. There is no adjustment to make from figure 8 right into the next cast. Plenty powerful and very accurate. Try it on an old rod you might like it.

From what I heard those were a disaster. They broke a lot. I am sure with a little re-engineering you could make a good design though.

If you're still looking for a long rod with a short butt, do some searching for the older red GLoomis sticks. I had a couple back in the day, had longer handles installed, but were a great rod that came with a really short butt.
