After the rubber part is removed there is a foam adhesive that is ridiculous to remove... Any ideas to remove it the quickest, most painless way possible?

Degreaser or WD-40, hair dryer and plastic puddy knife?

Acetone or Laquer Thinner?

That stuff removes almost anything.

Instead of this get some lacquer and enamel cleaner from an autobody supply store. Safe to use on any paint and it will cut glue, tar, bugs, you name it. I have used it many times on cars I have painted.

the keel protector keeps you from destroying your gelcoat, so when the keel protector fails (and many do), then you get to destroy the whole area underneath it while removing the glue and then replace the now compromised glass with another one and repeat.

my 20 year old glass boat has never had one on and is not compromise and won't be while being used in the same manner as i used a boat with a keel guard that i got to replace twice … never again.

keel guards are like the extra rust-proofing you can pay up for after buying a car … sometimes they look cool and that's about it.

And I here you, Jon, but I bought the boat with one on it already and it's peeling off - looks like hell. I have a feeling the gel coat beneath will be scuffed for better sticking, so I'm afraid I have little option but replace it. So I got a tip to try Zep "Big Orange" degreaser by a guy who removes some super tough adhesives on the daily within his business, but he orders it and I can't find any for sale at any stores... I'm going to try WD-40 and let it soak for an hour before attempting to scrape it off with a plastic puddy knife and my wifes hair dryer since I have the stuff for it, but next I'll try a tough degreaser. I hear the orange citrus versions of degreasers are a lot less abusive to gel coats - any truth to that, I'm not sure, but I'll take "words" for it in that regard.

orange citrus sounds like a good option and when you replace it make sure you put on a hamby's and nothing else and find someone to put it on that puts many, many of them on so that you don't end up in the same place again. i feel for you, that's a crap place to be and unless you do it yourself, the labor charge will be high. lots of time to remove/clean unfortunately.

Hamby's - check.

M&W Marine down here in Muskego wants over $250 for the job... I will take this on myself and take my time with it. I'll take some before, during and after pics and post if anyone cares to see how it's going. Never know when someone else will face the same dilemma.

3M, makes a pinstripe eraser wheel. They run about $30. Put it in your drill and go to it. You'll have it all off in no time. Any auto parts place will have them. BTW, I used one on a glass boat and it was recommended to me by a custom auto body shop. $30 well spent...

^^On the eraser wheel they work wonders. I would have it replaced with a Hamby's. They are all I run, can get damaged in heavy ice but call Hamby's about it and they are great to deal with on any issues. Tape on's don't last, especially with our cold water fishing. I beach mine on concrete ramps, sand, and rough rocks and have never worn one through(cut one up in ice) So to whoever said they wore one through I'm impressed.(unless it was a cheap stick on) buy quality once and be done.

Gas is a great degreaser. Used it just the other day to get some vinyl adhesive off a boat. Plastic putty knife to scrape,.

I would not use acetone! Acetone will harm whatever finish is on the hull....WD-40 usually works great on adhesives and good ole fashioned elbow grease.

I just removed my Hamby's keel guard; it took less than an hour. I drilled a hole in the keel guard where it was coming off the hull and put in an eye-bolt with a few washers as backing. I then hooked the bolt to a come-along which was hooked to my truck's hitch where the safety chains hook. It came off in a matter of minutes. I needed to drill three holes to complete the process. I spent another hour using a 3-M wheel to remove the adhesive. I will finish up tomorrow.
