I know many new anglers are on this site looking for someting to give them the edge to get that first muskie or first of a size range or weight.

Please introduce yourself and tell us the area you fish. There are many members here who catch numbers of muskies and are more then willing to help you. They might even live in your area!

My goal here at MF is to make sure everyone on site achieves thier goals!

Well I don't need to catch my first anymore, since last year was my first year of fishing I did manage to put a 23" and a 35.5" in the boat. Nothing to write home about, but fish non the less. The 35.5" I caught on Lake Minnetonka during an outing with a group of guys on this board. Musky Treats put me on the fish and gave me a lot of help and info on fishing Tonka as well as musky fishing in general. This year I hope to learn the lake a little more. So I will encourage those of you who are new to the board, don't be afraid to ask about things. A lot of people here willing to help shorten the learning curve of musky fishing. I'm also hoping to branch out and start fishing Petenwell as well as Vermilion this year. So don't be surprised if in the future I will hit some of you up for info on these 2 bodies of water.

I live in Western Pennsylvania and after one year of chasing musky, I'm still looking for my first fish -- not even a follow yet. I've been fishing on and off for most of my life, but since purchasing a boat last year I've averaged about 20 hours/month fishing for musky. Most of my time was spent on local lakes trolling. I read all the magazines, internet sites, etc. I know most recommend hiring a guide, but I feel with the knowledge I've gained by reading everything in sight that I should be able to boat a fish without spending the money for a guide. I hope it's just beginners bad luck. Anyway, most of the time it's just great being out on a lake enjoying the day -- even if I don't catch anything.

Kjadams, I started muskie fishing back in 1985, no internet then... I started hitting these boards as soon as they came out, and had the same opinon as you about guides, until I actually Hired one, and let me tell you, the things a guide will teach you in one day, will help you greatly and is money well spent.

I thought I would post something and see if I could learn a thing or two. I'm not looking for my first musky, however I am looking for my first 50-incher. Maybe 2003 will be my year. I am sure some of you would kill me if you knew where I was. I am under one hour away from open water on Cave Run. I have heard that the back bays are frozen a little, but with a little salt on the ramp I am sure you could launch. I guess us southern's don't care to much for this cold weather fishing thing.[:)] No, to be honest. I was on the Cave a few weeks ago, and it kicked my butt. I believe I need to work on my winter pattern. I am not doing a good job of it sitting in the house though.[]

River

I am like you. I can make it to cave run in about an hour and 30min. I have caught a few in a year and a half trying. One during last years Muskie First Cave Run outing. I picked up three more in the Licking River out of my canoe! It was almost like waterskiing with 80# Power Pro.

I too have a lot to learn. I rarely see info on winter patterns. Ever fish the Licking?

This year I am looking for my first out of the Ranger I bought this fall. The next fish may not be one of ten thousand casts but it will be one of $10,000.

2 for $5,000, 4 for $2,500... I have a long way to go.

River and Bruce.

Thank you for coming to muskieFIRST to learn, here is what I have for you that might help.

Tony Grant..Cave run guide is in the MuskieFIRST chat room on Wednesday night a 8pm CST. That might be a great time to ask some specific questions. Also the MuskieFIRST outing on the Cave March 28th thru 30th could be another great time to learn the water. We all work together as a team to catch fish...its all open book!. See the outings page on site for more details on that.

River Musky, I would say your easiest shot at a 50 incher would be Lake of The Woods. Muskie First outing would be a good start for you. I wish I could make it. It's a huge lake of course, but with alittle study and hardwork I would say you could do it within a reasonable time frame. Best thing is hookup with someone that knows the lake (possibility Muskie First's outing there or checkout the guys at Kentucky's Muskie Inc. chapter). It took me 15 years of spending vactions in Wisconsin to get my first 50 incher and only 2 years or second vaction to Lake of Woods to get a 52 incher. I have been going to Ky for the past 12 years more for the enjoyment of getting out early and being with good friends down there than for a shot at a 50 incher, but keep hitting Cave Run and also try Green River because I have seen people get them but not with the frequentcy that is happening in Canada. Good Fishing, Al[]

Thanks for the info Jason, I will look forward to that. Tony is one of my hero's. I'm alway's on the look-out for him on the Cave(what kind of pattern is he on?)[;)] Someday I hope to be like him and Bruce in there Ranger boats.[] Congrads on your boat Bruce, I am sure it will see many musky. I have only fished a very small section of the licking river, when I'm at the Cave. I seem to find myself going to the Kentucky River alot anymore. I love that place. Maybe I will head to the LOTW for that 50-incher.[]

Tomyv,

I live in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh and fish Arthur and Glendale mostly. I'm going to give Keystone Power Dam a try this year. Where are you located?

Guys

I would not miss the chat! I will be at the cave again this year too. I will be staying at Tony's. I think I am listed as Brewskie or something like that. I am super happy with the new boat. It is small, an R70 (bass boat) but has every thing I need. It is looking like I will have an open spot in it for the Cave Run trip.

River. What area of the Kentucky River you fishing? I have tried half heartedly at the High Bridge lock with no success. How far up do you have to go to catch fish on a regular basis?

Hey Bruce,

I have fished the KY river from Lock 10 to Lock 5. I have most of my luck in the 6-7 pool, and also 7-8 pool. The 6-7 would be below Highbridge. I love the river because the fish are always where they are suppose to be. The high percentage spots. So, if the musky aren't cooperating I go and catch afew largemouth until I feel it is primetime for the musky. I must say that the Cave still has the river beat in alot of way's. Number wise there are alot more in the Cave and also they seem to be bigger in the Cave. I don't think there as smart as the Cave Run fish. I am still undecided about the Muskiefirst outing. I will definitely be on the Cave before that, but I am not sure of my work schedule as of right now. I sure would like to catch my first 50-incher out of your new Ranger.[] I am also looking forward to see what Tony has to say tonight. See you there.

Mr. Pike, what's up? I misplaced your email. How did you're year shake out for ya?
Kj, I'm live in Washington, PA, and my office is over in West Mifflin near Century 3. Shoot me an email. We'll all have to hook up and churn some water this year. Looks like we're gonna make the trek out to clearfork for our first open water this year. []
