Texas Tackle split ring pliers, get the large size. By far the best purpose made- tool for the boat and workbench. John

Posts: 676 Location: Wisconsin | One of the best I've used, really good for heavy duty rings like Wolverines. http://www.mudhole.com/Rod-Building/MHX-X-SSORIES/MHX-Split-Ring-Pl...

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | If you don't have split ring pliers, use a small screw driver to split the ring a part. Start the hook on the ring and then start it on the lure and use needle nose pliers to finish it. Real pain if you do not have pliers. Don't skimp on the $1.99 ones either, pay at least $10+ for a decent pair. JMO

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | Split Ring pliers are by far the way to go. I shoudn't even say this but will procede with a disclamer of don't try this at home and swim at your own risk... If I don't have the pliers in the boat I've used another large musky hook. CAREFULLY use the hook point to get the ring split and slowly work the hook down. If using a 7/0 or bigger hook by the time you get to the barb the ring will be pretty well opened. I've also done the same with a knife with a fairly sharp point. With that said, GET THE PLIERS!
