Posts: 1224 Location: Okoboji | has anyone went on a build fest and brought a bunch of stuff to a trade show before? if so please tell me about your experience. it would be nice to do a couple shows and get the name out there and enable people to swim a custom bait vs the traditional off the shelf stuff. how receptive are people at the shows to custom baits? ![]() Edited by kodiak 11/5/2012 8:17 AM

I only use "local" baits. Nothing off the shelf. You may be surprised how many people would be interested in your basement baits. Made a lot of good connections and get all my fish every season on baits made by people I know.

Posts: 444 | When I go to the shows it's just to get custom baits. I dont go to the shows to buy a bait I can get at Thornes or Gander MTN. Not sure if it's against any rules or what not but it would be intresting if alot of the basement guys posted there customs for sale...for those of us not in the know... Posts: 1207 Location: Pigeon Forge TN. | I used to buy up blanks and go on a paint fest and take the custom stuff to Three Rivers show and a couple in Ohio. Haven't done it for years now but I did do well. I send some up to my Sister Rhoda to take to a couple show with her Grandma lures. Will do so again this year. I just don't have the time to go anymore.

I’ve done shows many years ago when I was with ERC and then Bradrock Baits. They are very enjoyable. I took my girlfriend to a few swap meets and she just loves the stuff. She calls it getting her “carnie” on lol. She never tires of her “I’m the hooker” joke. She talked me into getting into it again and we decided to do the Milwaukee expo this year. Doug gave a good deal on a “half” booth 5’x10’. I think I must be on an electrical panel or something. We just hope to break even and enjoy ourselves. I’ll have my new Molly Divers and topwaters there along with our other stuff.

I just want to caution everyone- if you sell more than $500. You will get a excise tax audit. Make sure you pay uncle Sam, because I know from experience- he reads this forum . Joe

Posts: 941 Location: Freedom, WI | It is not as simple as 10% if you do not want to overpay. If you do Chicago you will get a form to do a sales tax for your sales at the special event. First time I got that was last year. They will want your excise numbers so they can track you.

$500 per year. The 10% is not that easy. Depends on a host of factors such as selling any wholesale, if you sell overseas , etc....... Roger, I never got an excise form from the show. Is that for the gov or from the promoters? That could have saved some time .

Posts: 941 Location: Freedom, WI | It is not excise tax, it is the local sales tax and is for a special event. They want your numbers so they can check your sales for the year. Heard there was a vendor that was checked and his yearly sales was high enough that they wanted them to get an IL sales tax number so they decided not to come back. With IL money issues they are trying to get all they can from companies that come in once a year and do not have an IL sales tax number. It was the first time I got it and if I remember right you were not there last year, I paid it.
