| I have pulled my back out a few times from Muskie fishing. Whether it's from casting or working on my boat. It happens every now and then to all of us. Which much reluctance I visited a Chiropractor and was "adjusted" and I noticed a big difference right away.
I was wondering if any of you ever use a Chiropractor and did it make your pain go away? |

| I go on Mondays after being on the big water, like Cass and Mille Lacs.

| I had my neck adjusted after a rugby game back in my younger immortal days. Can't recall who we were playing, either KC or Chicago and a scrum collapsed, planting my head/face in the grass pretty good. After the game I couldn't turn my head to either side, so a chiropractor associated with the club gave me a quick adjustment, and while I was still sore, I regained my range of motion. So my take on Chiropractic is that it has it's place. Can't say I'd ever go to one for routine stuff, and that's been my only experience, but hey, it worked.

| I to have worn the victim suit, only to become the VICTOR![;)] I had 9 vertebrae out of sinc; the VA wanted to install a "zipper" in me back + operate...I went to a chiro + after 6 weeks(3 per week) was able to straighten out most of them. Last yr. I went to the VA for physical therapy + that helped some, but 3 of the vertebrae(lower) are permanent so no luck there. Before going out, get on all 4s...arch your back up + hold it high for the 10 count...then pull your back/stomach toward the floor, again for the 10 count. Do this 10 times...it will help stretch out your back + loosen you up.Called the cat stretch; Beav does this also + it helps him. Stretching out before doing stuff helps prevent added strain. Ask around for the best chiro + check to make sure your ins. will cover it. [:0] |

| I am a big believer that the old bonecracker can straighten out what ails you. I'm such a big believer, in fact, I take my chiro out on the water once a week. A buddy of mine is a chiropractor, and he claims to be so good all he has to do is fish with ya and your back will feel better. Seems to be working, I haven't needed him in a couple of years now. |

| Skip the MD. Skip the Chiroprator. Find yourself an Ostiopath. They are, in affect, a super-chiropractor with as much training and education as an MD. They know how the entire skeleton system works. The difference between an Ostiopath and a Chiropractor is like the difference between an computer engineer with a masters degree and an electronics tech with a two year Vo-Tech education.
I had a terrible back up until this year. Even had to trade in a new truck last year because it hurt my back so bad. Then I went to see an Ostiopath this spring and all it took was three adjustments and I was all better. I had been to a Chiropractor, but the guy just made my back much worse and even injured my shoulder.
If you have a bad back, find an Ostiopath. It will be one of the best decisions you ever make.

| Without too many gorey details, I have a defect in my back and was told by a back surgeon NEVER to go to a quack-ro-practor for it. Some of these guys are good and can do what they say, I've seen others who say they can cure everything from headaches to the common cold and cancer by popping your back. From what I was told, the more you have your spine 'manipulated', the more mobile it becomes and the more you need it 'adjusted'. I do leg lift exercises to keep the muscles around my spine firm to prevent movement. That's my situation, I'm sure there are others who are quite different. A competent medical diagnosis on the cause of your discomfort may be a good first step. m[] |

| Hey Now,
My back pain is different in that it came about first from psoriatic arthritis. But the result is muscle spasms and achy pain.
Try chiropractic. I go once a week, regardless. Otherwise I'd be unable to do much other than lay around.
Promise me this, though: don't let chiropractic get in the way of using strong prescription painkillers.
Seriously, there are some great stretches too. Some are adapted from yoga and others I have learned from experience.
Have a groovy day,

| Before the entire MF community starts drinking the Chiro-Kool-Aid let me interject a little dose of reality. I have been suffering from chronic neck pain for approximately 10 years following a painful injury sustained while being drug behind a boat at 50+ miles per hour and then the infamous whip which threw me hard.
Sure Chrio's can deliver short term pain relief often but what is the long term result of such treatment? I cannot be sure if additional damage occurred from visiting a chrio many years ago but the pictures don't lie about my current condidtion, it has deteriorated. I now have a severely herniated disk between c-5/c-6. My last "episode" of back outage was this spring and took me out for more then 6 weeks. I had to endure 3 very painful steroid injections directly into my epidural space in my neck. That has relieved the pain but the numbness still persists which is a symptom of nerve compression. My next option which I fear and just plain don't want to do for many reasons including there is no guarantee that the pain will be relieved is surgery. They want to cut me from the front of my throat, move my larynx and esophagus and remove the disk (yes from the front because all your neck muscles are in the back) and then knock a chunk of bone off my hip to insert where they have removed the disk. Then I would spend 4-6 weeks in a hard shell cervical collar. Followed by an additional 4-6 weeks in a soft (whiplash) cervical collar. Followed by 4 weeks of physical therapy. During recovery I would not be permitted to drive for a minimum of 3 weeks and could not move my head for the entire 4-6 weeks in the hard collar. Fishing of course would be out of the question as would be work.
To make a very long story shorter, don't confuse muscle pain with nerve pain. If you have ANY numbness, tingling or otherwise in your arms or legs, that may be nerve compression symptoms. If you visit a chiropractor with these symptoms and get a manipulation you may be at great risk for further damage. The area surrounding the spine where nerves can get compressed is very small, especially in the neck. I would suggest physical therapy to attempt to relieve the pain through exercise and muscle strength prior to taking the easy way out. |

| Hey Now,
I am always looking for fitness equipment that will help me stretch (crack) my back. My problem area is between the shoulder blades. Picked up a promising item at the outlet store for Sportman's Guide in South St Paul.
It's called Stamina 450 Back System, and I got one for $47 at the store including tax.
See it at www.sportsmansguide.com it is listed under Deals of the Day, otherwsie look under sporting goods/fitness equipment and look for Stamina brand.
It's basically a weight-banch witha large wheel against which you roll your back. There's handlebars above to grab onto to help stabilize or stretch in many different ways.
I've only had it for a week, but I like it so far...
Later,
papa joe again
ps: and Ultram (tramadol) 50mg tabs |

| I visited three chiropractors for what I (and they) thought was just minor details with my lower back. Each one I went to said they could fix the problem. Well, all three were wrong, so I moved to physical therapy per doctors orders. Same story there. One month later, the pain was unbearable so off I went to the orthopedic surgeon, and had an MRI. What the MRI showed was a severe seperation of the disc between my 3rd and 4th vertebrae that was crushing my sciatic nerve, which ultimately meant surgery to remove the disc and fuse the vertebrae. Now I have permanent damage to the nerve that runs down my right leg.
So, to wrap this story up, I would always consult with a medical doctor before going to any chiropractor. |

| As a medical professional I probably have a tainted view of chiropractor's. I believe there are some really good ones out there and some really bad ones as with anything else including MD's. I personally have never been to one but three of the physicians that I work with are D.O.'s (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) and they have done some work on me and it was very helpful. On the other hand I have seen many people come into the emergency room shortly after going to see a chiropractor with extreme pain and even herniated disks. Be carefull when choosing a chiropractor just as you would a physician. |

| 1/4 Irish, and yes when I can't afford a Chrio its a stop down to the local pub for a Grain Belt, MGD, Summit or Gunniess (in order of what I can afford at the given time :)
Speaking of a pub maybe this weekend after Minnetonka we should all crash a bar like the Narrows. |
