happy holidays to all!
in searching past posts, someone brought up "differences" between the first run of revos vs. the "improved" newer versions that can possibly be id'ed by the serial number?. does anyone know what the difference(s) are between them / the serial #'s to look for? i am looking at a a great deal on from a reputable supplier and wondering if it might one of the "old" versions still hanging around.
thanks in advance...

I had alot of problems with the "new" revos that I bought this year. The reels would lock-up, drags slipped (most common issue), instant antireverse going out, and casting control would loosen. In fact, I think I had 10 or 11 and I took them all back. I bought them because I had two revos that lasted all year last year 2009 and finally broke at the end. I think the differences is in the casting control/spool set up. That's what I saw when I took them both apart. Not sure about any of the serial numbers on the reels. I still have Abu's but they are the old 7000s and they havent failed me yet.
I have heard good things about the bigger Curados if you are looking for a low-pro reel. Personally I have not used them though.

I have seen no difference in the early Toro and the reels being made today. The Toro 4.6:1 does have a different spool brake, then the 6.4:1 and the 5.4:1, that is the only diffence in the reels. I have 4 in shop now and 3 are old ones from last year and one is NIB getting a Super Tune and bearings upgrade and there is no difference.

I'd also be interested in hearing more about the bearings upgrade & super tune. Can the bearings on the 60hs also be upgraded? Thanks.

I upgrade stock Bearings to ABEC 5-7 Ceramic Bearings, they will never rust and they need less oiling then steel ball bearings. On a new reel I will remove all the factory oil and grease, the factory puts way to much grease in a reel, then reoil with Hot Sauce oil and grease. I also will polish alot of the parts that are inside of the reel, like the spool shafts, inside of the pinion gears, main gears, worm gear shaft and install ceramic line pawls, drag washers and install Carbontex drag washers, the inside of the brake drum, the top of the anti-ratchet washer, the bottom of the key washer, all this will make the reel and drag smoother. I do alot of Bass Reels that guys are casting 1/8-1/4 baits, that is where you will see a big difference over a stock reel, on Musky reels you will not see alot of difference in casting distance but the reels will feel twice as smooth reeling and casting of baits. On tune reels you will not have to put as much effort into your casts, because the reel is smoother it will cast the same distance but with less effort. I have been playing around with the different spool brake weights to see how I can make a reel not backlash as much. I have been doing this for over 10years now, did over 300 reels last year.

I've heard that abu switched something in the newer toros. I bought 3 at the beginning of the season and within 3 weeks all 3 broke. 2 of them the thumb bar stopped engaging and the third the drag went pop then no more spool tension. I traded them in for curado's and couldn't be happier.

That's kind of funny because I have 2 Curado reels at the shop that have broken Thumb Bars and worn out level wind pawls from heavy braid use. ALL REELS will break !!!

I'm not saying all reels don't break. My curado's have held up a lot better than the abu's. I had 2 abu's go out in less than 40hours of fishing. I'm not claiming to be a reel expert by any means. I'm just saying what I know from experiance.

All reels do break and we have broken every reel except the Avets. I have never had a run of reel problems like I have had with the new Revos. We broke three in one day and then I said enough was enough. Not doing anything wrong or throwing heavy baits. I love the palmability of the reel and my hand holding it felt less fatigued than using a round reel. They just dont last.

If you broke 3 Revos in one day you are doing something seriously wrong!

We have two on video. One was throwing a Pacemaker and the other was throwing a very small bucktail. Both were broke on fish so maybe thats the wrong part. lol

if anyone else is interested in the deal i found, it was on the tacklewarehouse.com site. the only model that had the special price of $174.99 was the revo toro left handed 51 with the 5.4:1 ratio. all of the other models were at the "normal" $269.99. as of this morning they still showed that special price and in stock...

I have had great luck with my Curados. So far, can't say anything bad. Probably 50-60 days on the water, mostly use them for jerkbaits. I just bought a Toro, based on all the hype I had read about them the last 18 months. This is the first "negative" report I have seen on them. I like the feel, so hopefully it will perform.
