I have an 8ft rod that is rated for 1-3 ounce lures, I just bought it last year and its a gander mountain pro select... Do you guys think I could possibly throw larger lures with this rod? like for instance lures that are about 4 ounces?? i have some topwaters that are roughly 4 ounces in weight and I was just curious if I would be able to pull off casting these lures with the pro select rod?? Any advice would be nice.

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | I don't have that particular rod, but I bet 4 ounce baits would be fine. I have a Gander rod rated for 1.5-4, and I throw 5 ounce Weagles with it. It casts them quite well. You might not want to snap cast those baits really hard, but I bet it would cast them with something between a lob and a typical cast. You can usually tell if you are overloading a rod. If it seems like a lot of work, or like the rod is REALLY loaded up on the back cast, you are probably over working it. curleytail

I abuse the heck out of it, throwing baits as heavy as about 11 ounces with it. I definitely wouldn't recommend this as I'm sure it's just a matter of time before I do damage to it. But being a bit careful, I've been able to throw pretty much everything in my box with that rod and it's performed great. Aaron Edited by AWH 3/9/2009 5:46 PM

I have that one, and I've thrown mag-dawgs for one season. Absolutely no problems with it.

Posts: 2515 Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | We have the Pro Select IM8 and the Tournament Extreme at the top. I believe the XH Pro Select 8' is rated for up to 6oz. I can check tonight. There's no rod out on the market that's better than the Pro Select for $80.00 imho.
