Does anyone know what the girth measurement was on that fish? I know how much it weighed, where it came from, who caught it, etc...but am curious about a girth measurement, or at least an estimation of one. Thanks...

I think Louie Spray's brother caught it.

Let's see- ~ 56 years after the fact, good luck! If you could find the taxidermist & his estate, or heir's, you might find the original measurements. Back then all they cared about was weight. Caught in early August @ 38lbs, probably a +50" class female fish. All WI official record fish are based on weight, so you need to put it on a certified scale.

Let's not go down the Louie Spray route. It's a disgrace to equate all past record's as having similar controversy, i.e., 56 years later. If you want a new WI record pike, just go catch it!........ However, you're going to have to convince the WI DNR. I think they have seen the lessons of the past, including all the controversy over the WR muskie. I don't think having all your drunken buddy's sign affidavit's is going to make it a certified record. My first phone call would be to the local WI DNR Fisheries Biologist or local Game Warden, i.e., meet me at the boat launch . Then I'd call Rick Lax!

Have fun!

There is a mount of it (probably a replica) at a gas station around by Oshkosh. This is more of a personal oddball curiosity of mine than anything else.

Yep, they do but it's the weight. I've got that, I'm just looking for girth. Could figure a rough estimate out using a muskie weight formula by plugging in the weight and length but I was hoping someone would know where to find a definate girth measurement on that fish instead of an estimation.

If I remember right, as a kid growing up, we used to eat at this bar/restaurant on the way to and from canada that had this mounted fish in it. I have asked in the past about this bar as I do not remember it's location. Nobody seems to remember it either. It would have been on old rt 53 before it was a 4 lane highway, when you had to go through all the little towns between bloomer and solon springs.

I believe a bar in hayward,WI has a replica of the fish. I worked there for 2 years and can remember seeing it in a glass case. Been 10 yrs ago but I think that's where I saw it.

Joe Fittante did a repo of the State Record Pike, it's hanging in the Bar at the Refuge in Antigo right on Hwy 45. In fact he did repos of all the state record fish and they are all displayed together there. Pretty cool. Anyway giving him a call or dropping him an email may get you an answer. Though he may have just estimated the girth based on the lenght and weight. But it's a good place to start.

Good luck, let us know if you find the answer.

Todd - We also would make a traditional stop when headed up to northern WI in the late 50's . There was one bar- it had absolutely the best hot beef sandwiches. However, there were also some big mounted fish. The bar was in town (really no more than a wide spot in the road) on the right side as we went north.

So, which side of the road? In town or out of town? I assume you've already asked mom & dad ;-). Maybe a summer road trip project!

Have fun!

The mount of that fish is in a little bait store on County Highway K, West of 45/ 32 in Conover as you're going towards North Twin.

Al, that's the place!!! Nobody can remember the town or the bar. It was on the west side of the street, I sure of that. The pike was in a glass case and I remember it not being a replica. None of those fish were. I remember an 8lb brookie in there too. The bar was full of huge fish mounts. I don't think it was in a bigger town like rice lake or chetek, i thought it was in a smaller town. I could be wrong but Ithink it was. I m surprised nobody else remembers.

cbuf, this bar was right on old rt53. It was full of big fish mounts. We ate there throughout the 70's. I am sure somebody somewhere knows if it is still around. I am fairly certain the 38lb pike in the glass case there was the real mount.

The big tiger muskie hanging in the Moccasin Bar was caught by Delores Ott-Lapp in 1951 from Lac Vieux Desert (Vilas County, WI) 53" 50lb 4 oz. However, it's also not the WI record or world record tiger muskie. That was also caught in LVD by John Knolba in 1919 (54" 51lb 3 oz).

Cal Johnson's fish also hangs in the Moccasin Bar, but that fish is a natural strain muskie- According to Cal Johnson's son "the musky weighed 67 pounds 8 ounces, measured five feet and one-half of an inch in length, and had a thick 33-inch girth."

Have fun!
