Posts: 956 Location: Home of the 2016 World Series Champion Cubs | Heading up to Crow Lake Ont. for my first time in late sept. Other than knowing that its a clear water lake, I know nothing else about it. Decent weed sturcture? Significant reefs/islands? (still waiting on a map) Current areas? Is it on a flowage? Algae bloom? If so, when? Not asking for your hotspots, just some general tips and clues on a lake I've never been to. I'm not saying I woulndt appreciate a hot spot or to, just not asking for them. Thanks, Karl Edited by KARLOUTDOORS 9/11/2005 11:44 PM

Posts: 2754 Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | Karl- You definitely want the new color map for Crow (Kagagi), i.e., the one by Red Lake Digital Media Inc.... I picked mine up at Anglers Pro Shop in Nestor Falls. Angler's Pro Shop Address: P.O. Box 279 Nestor Falls ON P0X1K0 Phone: 807-484-2525 Website: www.ontariosunsetcountry/anglersproshop Contact: Phil & Cindy Haggberg Surface area; 29,629 acres Perimeter: 116 miles Max depth: 198 feet. Islands, reefs, bays, points, so many good looking spots you will be overwhelmed. Phil can also tell you what's hot at any given time of the year. He and Cindy had a home on Crow for ~ 17 years. Another individual to chat with is Bob Pieske (MF member "rpieske") .) I am so jealous, Bob fishes LOTW Sabaskong Bay and Crow almost the entire season May-Sept. He's very knowlegable on what's going on with both lakes. Have fun! Al Edited by ESOX Maniac 8/1/2005 9:41 AM

| Karl: Watch out for reefs! I've been on Crow a couple of times. Its very deep and very clear. The reefs are solid granite and come out of no where. Pay close attention to your map and slow down. | |||

| Karl Check out the reports section at the Muskie Bay Resort website. There is a lot of helpful information there. | |||

Posts: 670 Location: Minnetonka , MN. | There are no good maps of Crow! I have a lower unit on one of the rock piles. I'm going back in late Sept. and do some trolling. I must have rocks in my head. Edited by TECK 8/2/2005 8:56 PM

Posts: 956 Location: Home of the 2016 World Series Champion Cubs | Teck, When and where are you goind to stay? We're staying at allen's arriving aerly on the 17th thru the 24th. Maybe we can hook-up. I seriously doubt my wife will fish more than three days. Any more would be a surprise. Hopefully I'll get her on a couple of fish early and she'll catch the fever like the rest of us. It'll be her first time muskie fishing and first time in Canada. Ive read Dick's book twice already, each before a trip up north, and I've just taken it of the shalf again. Its like studying for a test with an awesome reference book. Thats why I cant wait to get a map to start identifying some of the sweet spots. Al, Thanks for the tips. Ill get right on the map from APS/ Nestor falls. Karl

Posts: 2754 Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | That's a tough one- most resorts have guides they use/recommend. Personally, I haven't stayed at any of the resorts on Crow. I also haven't used a guide on Kagagi/Crow, but have managed to locate and catch fish there. I would probably ask Phil at Anglers Pro Shop for a recommendation. That's not to say Crow is an easy lake to fish, i.e., it's a Canadian "trout water" . These types of Canadian water's can be very rewarding or very humbling. When I hit this kind of water I try to not get overwhelmed by all the available structure. Read Dick Pearson's book, especially the section on trout water. Every rock reef doesn't hold fish, neither does every point. You have to explore and learn the stucture make up of each spot. The map will only show you there's a reef, point, saddle, or break line. You have to go there and take a look. If it doesn't look good take a couple casts & move on! I use the morning & early afternoon to explore, then fish hard from ~3:00PM to dark on the the "milk run" spot's I've found. (right now I have ~10 spot's marked on my map as my milk run). Alway's start with the spot farthest from camp and work your way back toward camp, you don't want to have a 12 mile run back to camp in the dark, especially if there's no moon or you're not real comfortable with the lake. There are some who catch some really nice fish and numbers of fish trolling large baits- Jakes and Wishmasters. This is also a great way to explore, i.e., it slows you down, yet you can cover a lot of water. For me the exploration of new area's is the best part of the game. However, I am not a expert on Kagagi/Crow, as I've only actually spent two (2) day's on it. One day in late June of this year and one day in 2003. But it is one of those lakes that I will always come back too. So what the heck was I doing on Crow? Taking a break from catching +10lb walleyes with the ZaltNAD gang on our annual trophy Canadian walleye expedition....... I think maybe next year Kagagi will get it's own dedicated expedition Have fun! Al Edited by ESOX Maniac 8/6/2005 8:13 AM

| I have a marked map of Crow from a guy who's fished it for years. He marked the following as good spots, but I don't have a time frame for when these ARE good. Try: 1. Wade Portage 2. Young Bay 3. Emm Bay 4. All around the narrow stretch going towards the dam | |||

Posts: 956 Location: Home of the 2016 World Series Champion Cubs | Thanks to all. Its a good start. I did manage to get a copy of the Red Lake Digital Map but it does not show wade's portage. Any way to clarify that one??? And I'm tearing through Dick Pearson's book as usual. Always a good refresher especially when hitting the clear waters. Now I get to sit and wait for the departure date. Ugh! I'll have to get a little more fine tuning and practice in I guess. Karl

Posts: 2754 Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | Karl- Look on the lower east section of the lake right above the map scale - just north of Brown Trout Lake. Have a great trip! Al

Posts: 956 Location: Home of the 2016 World Series Champion Cubs | Sorry for the late report. Been traveling three of the last four weeks. Al thanks for the suggestions. Some very fishy looking spots. Sad to say my wife and I blanked on the trip to Crow Lake as far as muskies go. Raised fish daily but none came to eat. We were there from 17-24 sep while the temps both air and water were both unseasonably warm. Water was still in the low 60's and with claer skies daily and only one day with any kind of chop on the water yes it was tough out there. Most of out action was along the south shore of the lake. Did get in to some lake trout though. Fished two days on LOW and caught a number of small walleye and bass along with some NICE crappie and perch. Witnessed a guy walleye fishing fight a muskie for 1hour and 45 minutes before getting her in the net. 38" nearly 17 pounds on an U/L spinning rod with 4# line. there to no muskies for us. Al I'll be seding your map back with a few notations. Thanks again. Karl Fished some Hayward area lakes last week also had some tough times there as well. Highlight was a fat 44" girthed at 21" which charts out at 24.25 lbs. caught on LCO. She felt like every bit of that I'd say. There too we were there at the onset of turnover and right after a 9" rain. Air and water again on the WARM side. Edited by KARLOUTDOORS 10/19/2005 7:54 PM
