| Unfortunately, we have cloudy skies here in Rhinelander. Seems like that has been the case for the last couple years. | |||

Posts: 1604 Location: Brighton CO. | A couple months ago we had some type of Lunar Eclipse where the moon was going to be blood red and we missed it because of rain. It's rare that we get the Auroras by me I live about 70 miles south of Wyoming. I have ap on my phone for the Auroras and where we can see them and sometimes they go as far south as mid Wyoming and when I've seen them here at home they have been weak at best. If I didn't know what to look far I would have missed them. We've seen them on our fishing trips in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. I'll be in Hayward new moon of October this year maybe with some luck we'll see them this year.

| Great shot! Back in the early 90s, we rented a home in Marquette, directly across the street from Lake Superior, facing due north. Some of the light shows there were spectacular. One night I was reading after everyone else went to bed, suddenly bright lights shining through the closed curtains. Had time to wake my wife up and watch the show for almost 10 minutes. To the north, nearest land was Canada. Wish we would have had smart phones back then ;>). | |||

Posts: 1604 Location: Brighton CO. | Last night (9/14) the Aurora's showed up in the Denver area we went out to look for them but they were gone. Lots of pictures from Wyoming too. I have app on my phone and it said zero chance of seeing them by me. We live on the edge of town so went out were it was darker but it gets harder to find dark places people move out in the country and light the place up like Fort Knox. I would hate to see there electric bill.

Posts: 1414 | Could be decent again tonight. If you are in an area with light pollution, use your phone. Sometimes when you can't see them yourself, your phone can.

Posts: 1604 Location: Brighton CO. | Last night there were places in Colorado where you could see the Northern Lights, on the news today they said there's a chance to see them tonight (11/12) so if we have a chance to see them here I'm thinking all you folks in the northern part of the country might have a chance to see them. (last night I had my nose in a Hockey game so I didn't go out and look) Locally they are saying to look from 5 P.M.- 9 P.M.

Posts: 1414 | The KP index (scale for measuring solar storms), was a 9 last night. A 5 will usually give you decent northern lights. Reports are that they were the best in 20 years. There were 3 big storms and 2 of them combined before reaching earth, last night. The third is arriving this evening. Last night was the first time I ever saw them with the naked eye, in my yard here in the metro, even with all of our light pollution. Pictures have been showing a variety of colors, too. Reds, oranges, greens.

I live in the Northwoods and we don't have a lot of light pollution but my neighbor to the North West has a very bright Sodium light right down by the shore (think street light). He has given us permission to turn off when the northern lights are possible and did do that to see a meteor shower in August.

| Thanks for the reminder! They have been very bright tonight, bright enough to reflect lines on the lake. Not sure I have seen that here before. By the way, my neighbor got some spectacular shots with his cell, using settings he found on google, showing reds and greens not visible to the naked eye. I can see a little green but nothing like what his cell photos are showing. Had no idea a cell could take that type of photo. | |||
