I probably own 50 reels (spinning/baitcast/sw trolling and linecounters) 3 have mono and they are all ultralights for panfish/trout. Even in UL I have several loaded with braid....when I want to fish fluorocarbon for walleye for example, I just put a 15 yard top shot on my 3/8 fireline. Same for bass and pike but typycially only 3-8 feet leader to braid. Full spools of mono have no place for 95% of my fishing...superlines rock.

For panfish, I have starting using light braid, after using mono for decades. Last summer, I was thinking of doing what IA Justin described when fishing Eagle for walleye. However, the guys I went with talked me into just spooling with fluorocarbon. The guides there had said, braid is great but you will have so many break offs you will constantly be putting new flouro leader material on. And that was a good call. Must have lost at least 25 jigs in the rocks and had a muskie take a bunch of line along with my jig. Just easier to load all fluorocarbon in that case.

I own quite a few ultra lights for Trout and Panfish, You can't beat good old Stren 4# clear blue for Trout and I have a few older reels that came with two spools some I have 4# Strean or even 2# for ice fishing sized jigs for small Panfish living in ponds, or on other rigs 4# Strean and 6# Spider wire. What gets harder I have Walleye rigs where say Spider wire on one spool and 8# Strean Maga thin in green a lot of the Magna thin is going away. For bait casters for Walleye I have a rig with 10# Triene XT ? the green stuff. and another 40# Spider wire then I put some type of Flour leader. I also have a jigging rod with 8# green Magna thin and a spool with bright green Briad for line watching. When my grandparents were alive they two rods each a Cane pole with mono and spinning rod with mono and fished out of a 14 foot row boat with 7.5 outboard and no fish finder, he would rifle sight his spots and if the wind changed have grandma lift the anchor off the bottom to reposition the boat with the oars. Two things some of the mono brands are going away and reels only come with one spool and it can be a act of god to find and buy the right second spool.

I have braid on all of my spinning and casting reels from ultralight on up to Musky casters/trollers, and use 1' - 3' Fluoro leaders where needed. I don't mind tying a new leader on if I have to. The only reels I own with mono are line counters with 10 lb Trilene XT for trolling Lake Superior Trout, Salmon, & Walleye.

All my trout, salmon reels have mono. All panfish reels have Mono.

All but 1 rod for Musky are spooled with braid.

 Never bought floro, Never will!

All my musky stuff, from Revo Toro Beasts and Revo Toro Ss , down to a couple original revo toro reels are spooled with braid, the latter matched to a couple "flippin' stick" bass rods for downsize stuff. I keep a couple 5000/5500s spooled with 20# Trilene on MH bass rods for even smaller stuff like the venerable Mepps #5, and Rapala J-13s. I've enjoyed a lot of success on both setups.

I keep another 5500 loaded with 50# braid, and a Revo X with 30#, for other stuff.. Everything else I have (Revo Xs and spinning reels) is loaded with mono.. right down to 4# for the ultra lite stuff.

For braid on the muskie reels, how often to you guys change the line? As in respool?

Completely depends on how much you fish, and use that reel..I have 100lb Cortland on a TE700 that line is 8 years old, I throw this reel only if ice up is an issue and I want to throw pounders or other huge rubber at ice up....so it gets almost no use..No plan to change this year..On my Tranx 500's every two years I respool..and flip after a season. My (3) 500's get 90% of my casts. I have two Tranx 400's line is 4 years old, no plan to change this year, I don't throw them nearly as much. That's one huge benefit to braid, imo...I'd never trust 10 year old mono on a spinning rod, I have no issues with 10 year old superline. Unlesss you're losing 25 jigs on the bottom.

Use braid for Muskie and catfish. Mono is on everything else.

I dunno... mono's stretch characteristics buys one occasional forgiveness..especially in the lighter line tests.

For all muskie casting, braid. For trolling, still prefer 30-40lb. big game mono. Kdawg

A correctly set drag and the right power rod for the selected prey should have all the forgiveness necessary.

Personally i use power pro maxcuatro to a stealth tackle pre tied wire leader

The stuff casts so far it almost becomes a hazard if there are other people around out in the water

Downsize is at least with the 20lb is its so thin i think it causes it to knot and tangle and become almost impossible to untangle
If you are using live bait as i learned during the ice season light fluorocarbon 15lb-20lb max especially if it is heavily pressured or run a small steel in open water

For my small pike/bass/all purpose setup i am trying out topshotting with mono and fluoro to save money by filling around 5/8ths of the reel with mono then the rest with fluoro so i don't have to retie a fluorocarbon leader

The fluorocarbon is mainly for the faster sinking rate so ill tie it to a small steel leader

It makes little difference as i caught a 4lb largemouth bass that was in around 2ft of water that not only did i spook but could clear as day see the senko bead and steel leader that still came back it and took it 15 seconds after i spooked it in crystal clear water
