Posts: 938 Location: NeverNever Lake | Don't know any baitmakers out there that wouldn't repair or replace it w/no questions asked. Vipers came with the screw in weight but they don't have that much taper.

Posts: 2061 Location: Belgium | all the lacquer broke free from the lure taking all the white paint and the color pattern with it. It's rare that this happens but I would try to get it replaced.

Posts: 1939 Location: Black Creek, WI | Really? You guys think that a lure maker should be liable for cracked clear coats... and on WOOD lures? Yes, it is nice gesture and good for thier business... but should it really be expected? If I tossed my favorite Undertaker onto the rocks, chipped the clear coat, and then continued to fish with it before re-sealing it with epoxy or Envirotex.... I'd consider that MY fault... not the lure manufacturer's. If it exploded on its own due to a flaw in the clear coat... I'd still try to fix it myself rather than complain. Fixing a crack in a clear coat is pretty simple. Maybe I'm just being confrontational today from my cold medicine.... but I see a very fine line here. Should I send my favorite Suick back and demand a replacement because of the 1/4" hook grooves worn into it?? Darn thing didn't hold up like I expected. Where do we draw the line between a faulty product and operator abuse/neglect??? Just curious. jlong

Posts: 2061 Location: Belgium | I mean if it comes off without hitting rocks (I don't know many wooden lures that can take a hit from rocks, not even cobb's gliders) I think it's the decent thing to do. But if it's your own fault, better get a new one yourself. A suick/bobbie bait/reef hawg is something else. Those wooden lures are not expensive and they tend to work better when they get waterlogged because they are made from buoyant wood. Sinkig lures just start to sink faster when they take in water. That's no good. But we all know these wooden lures have thin clearcoats and you just get used to it or do without these lures. If one of my lures doesn't work properly or something happens to it that shouldn't be the case, I would always consider repainting it for that person. Edited by divani 10/30/2003 7:19 AM

![]() | Funny, I've bounced DepthRaiders off of Rocks intensionally, by grinding rock while power trolling and some of these lures are entering their 6th season of use. I've bounced Mantas off of rocks accidentally and their paint doesn't peel. I've purchased two Musky Innovations Shallow Invaders and the paint peeled on both lures like you would a bananna: the first came via treble hook swing marks, the second by bouncing rocks on a retrieve. I've had Mouldy Hawg Wobblers bleed paint when they come into contact with any plastic item; worm, grub, plastic storage box. I think any lure manufacturer has choices for the body composition and paint and should consider the above examples of angler usages as being normal usages and thinking that bouncing a lure off of rocks is ABUSE is simply foolish. I suppose that when a musky bites a wood, clear coated lure, it's the responsibility of the angler to stop using that lure and switch to another lure so that touch up at homes can happen? As a satisfied customer, I would like to cast that chewed lure right back out to catch perhaps another musky? I would think that in todays lure manufacturing markets, those that take a beating and keep on ticking will be the measuring bar for other manufacturers and if their paint falls over right out of the box, well, word gets around and sales will be impacted. Posts: 5874 | I have an Undertaker that has some of the paint chipped off. I think it adds character, and would never ask for a free replacement. I didn't hit any rocks with it. I think it started with a decent fish caught last year, and water got under the clear coat and lifted it off the lure. I did the epoxy fix, like Jason suggests, before it got too bad, and it works just fine. Has caught 5 fish for me this year.

Posts: 358 | Briguy48, If the top coat cracked on its own, definitely send it back (just make sure you contact the manufacturer ahead of time and inform him/her of the problem) 99% of all bait companys want to know if their baits fail. Musky fisherman spend a lot of money on their tackle and almost all of the manfucturers are customer sensitive. Another reason to send it back is that the manufacturer may not realize that they had a bad run (this happens occasionaly) of baits. This happened to me recently with a Shallow Invader that I purchased. Threw it for about an hour and the top coat began to peel. I called them up, no problem at all (I should have mentioned this under ToddM customer service post) and they were aware that they had issues with a certain color pattern not adhering to the top coat. By the way, they were QUICK to respond and I had a brand new bait in my mail box within days of contacting them. Just a side note guys/gals. Wood baits can get a little tricky sometimes when it comes to sealing/top coating them. Since there are a variety of different top coating & sealing materials out there that can be used they will all differ in regards to how well they hold up to normal wear and tear.

Posts: 2384 Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | I'll trade you a good conditioned one for that one!!!!!! That one will probably soak up a little water making it heavier and therefore run deeper. That will be a hot bait. If you don't like it, add a little perminant marker/paint and a little hardcoat and continue to us it. Lures that sing the right song to the fish are worth their weight in gold.

Posts: 32958 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I have received excellent customer service from Undertaker, though I have had only one bait lose it's finish. That one did so in the box, had a problem of some kind. It was replaced with no questions.

Posts: 1936 Location: Eau Claire, WI | You may reach Jim Shaefer at [email protected] or through the sponsors page of my website. If you have trouble call me... I will personally exchange the bait for you with my own or a color of your choice. Now...before you do this.. I have probably 20 Undertakers all the way from the first years up to current production. Maybe 4-5 of them have had finish problems mostly because I DO bounce them off of rocks by accident and sometimes on purpose because I fish that tight to structure on my home water. What I do is cover the blemishes with regular clear epoxy and it works great. Let me know if you need any help.
