Location: MN | My hand slips off the tranx handle sometimes when I set the hook. Has anyone tried to modify it to give it some grip? I was thinking of putting groves in it but I am worried how it will turn out. Is there a knob that I could replace it with without replacing the whole handle? For those of you that have put the LJV handle on have you had issues with your reel engaging due to no counter balance? Does the knob on this handle have better grip?

Posts: 186 Location: West Chicago, IL | Same thing happens to me.....the handle is slippery and too big If I fish slow moving baits (dawgs, medussas, etc), I have no problem with the handle. However, when I use fast moving baits (line seems to pick up a little more water) my hand seems to slip off fairly easily

Posts: 1100 | You can change the knob, to other shimano models, not sure which ones fit, but the knob from some of the bigger Stella reels should fit.

Posts: 1100 | I agree, use the rod, you could end up bending the handle.

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | I understand what the OP is saying. Using the Tranx extensively this year, I noticed on some bucktail strikes, or sudden structure impacts while reeling, the hand slipped off inadvertantly at times. I had to adjust the way I hold the handle, and 'wrap' my fingers of the front of the handle instead of just grabbing onto it. It's no less comfortable. In terms of setting hooks, using the reel handle and the rod together works best for us. Stopping the retrieve when a fish hits can be a difficult habit to break, but continued reeling eventually becomes reflex.

Location: MN | muskie! nut - 9/12/2014 7:16 PM I use the rod to set the hook. Why are you using the handle? Obviously I use the rod to set the hook. I try to keep reeling on most hooksets so the fish does not get slack when you extend the set all the way. I also use my reel hand to steer the rod in the hook set. I have never had my hand slip off another reel knob and I have never bent a handle. I feel I get pretty good hooksets so I do not think the set is the issue especially since it sounds like others have had the slip problem as well. Next time you set the hook try to use only your rod hand and let us know how that goes. Do you even own a Tranx?

Got a link of what you are referring to? Isn't the aluminum knob pretty slippery when wet as well? Can anyone answer the original question? Has anyone modified the tranx handle or found a replacement that fits that has better grip?

Posts: 752 | I have been using the HG and PG Tranx since they came out and have not experienced this issue. If you dont like the stock Handle cough up another $50.00 and put a Trinidad or an LJV handle on it....

Posts: 752 | Not sure... My guess would be that replacing the knob would require some alteration to the handle with power tools of somekind...

Posts: 1100 | Ebay, and search for "reel knob", or "power reel knob", also really love the EVA handle knobs.
