I'm traving to Canada from the US next month for a week and my US passport expires in sept. Will I have issues at the boarder or should I just bite the bullet and pay for expedited service to renew it?

Thanks

Next month is July? Will you return before September?

If it isn't expired during your travel dates, why would you have issues? If something is not expired, it's still valid.

I've heard some countries will not allow you to enter if your passport expires within 6 months because that's how long you are normally allowed to stay at one time. I wasn't sure if Canada is strict on this or not.

When you go through customs they will ask you where you are going and length of stay. I cannot say for certain because I had a new passport, but I would imagine that you would be fine provided your stay would end prior to when your passport expired.
At that rate I am not sure if you would even be able to renew your passport prior to your trip.

if traveling by car ( which I assume) you do not legally even need a passport to enter Canada. The only reason they ask for one is because they know the United States requires you have one to come back into the US. So no, you will have zero issues

Musky Brian - I believe the only way you cross over by car without a passport is if you have a advanced drivers license. That all changed when they implemented the Western Hemisphere travel initiative.

The WHTI has absolutely nothing to do with crossing the border into Canada.

Crossing the border back into the States, yes, but not into Canada.

Brian only mentioned crossing into Canada.

Best bet is to just give them a call. I can't imagine you'd have an issue. I'm not sure expedited service would get it to you in time, not sure what their processing times are these days.

what he said...that is ONLY a US Law, and as I mentioned the Canadians ask for it because they know the US requires it on the way back....

From the Homeland Security website.

I'd just obtain and maintain a passport. That said, you have a valid passport and will be returning to the US before it expires. You're good to go.

Don`t pay for service only takes two weeks anyway. I`m the one guy they never sent birth cert back. Got passport but no birth cert. Lucky I had two. Wonder what ever happened to that. Only took two weeks though.

I Needed my birth certificate to give the post office for proof to get the passport. Had to call the SO. Dak. state Cap to get a new one. That came in 4 days. When I was at the post office to apply for the Passport, I ask her if I could use my baptismal Cert. and she ask me what is that. I didn't know what to say. Today still I can not believe that . ??????
